What Is A Blessing

In a town called Bethsaida the Disciples gathered around Jesus to tell Him about some of the deeds that they had accomplished. As they were speaking, slowly in the distance, they could see a crowd gathering & approaching them. Jesus had compassion on the crowd as they appeared as ‘like sheep without a shepherd.’ Once the crowd had formed around them Jesus got into a boat & began teaching them. As the daylight hours began to thin & the crowd had not dispersed, the Disciples asked Jesus to send them away into the nearby countryside in order to find food & drink. Jesus asked, “You give them something to eat.” The Disciples were stunned speechless by such a command as they had no idea how to feed such a multitude of people with only five (5) loaves & two (2) small fish. Thus, Jesus held the the loaves & fish in His Hands “He looked up to heaven and said a blessing over them.”

This story of the Feeding of the Five Thousand is what comes to my mind when I think about the word, bless, which is found in this following passage :

Genesis 12:2

2 And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing

What’s absolutely startling about the Feeding miracle is that it overturns our conception of ‘I will Bless you.’ Why? The Disciples had brought to Jesus ONLY five loaves & two fish. Is this really a blessing? Can only these two food items be seriously considered for feeding a multitude? And the short answer is that it is only because the real power lay beneath the surface of the these two morsels. Jesus.

By the way, WHY did Jesus send the Disciples off two-by-two on a quasi-missionary journey at the beginning of chapter of 9 in Luke’s Gospel? Was it merely a time for Jesus to spend some quality alone-time with God the Father? Or was it deeper than that? Deeper, how? Jesus sent the Disciples on this missionary journey in order that they would experience the power of God in all that they did. In other words, the experience of being a blessing to other people.

What the Disciples forgot during the feeding miracle is the same reason we also forget — to be a blessing for others, we must be blessed in the first place. What does this mean? Consider, what Jesus was asking the Disciples to do — You give them something to eat — what was the expectation? Clearly, Jesus expected that the Disciples would be the main actors here, not Jesus. He was expecting that the Disciples learned the true value of their missionary journey — that the power of God is what enabled them to accomplish some miraculous feats. And yet, what was their reply — five loaves & two fish.

Stunned by the size of the crowd & the enormous task before them they failed to recognize the power in their midst — to be a blessing for others, one must be blessed in the first place. The power was not in the five loaves & two fish; the power was the person holding the five loaves & two fish, for Christ said a blessing over them, such that the blessings flowed from Christ to the multitude.

Many times, when we pray, we ask the Lord for what we need — to be blessed by Him. Many times what we ask for are not spiritual in nature nor are they spiritually related. And the reason is that the physical necessities of life outweigh what is spiritual, thinking that the two are unrelated. Just like the Disciples’ thought process — What does feeding the multitude have anything to do with what they experienced in their missionary journey? Yet, the physical burdens & necessities of life are related spiritually — they are interconnected. Because the joy or the strain of life will effect our outlook spiritually; they can even countermand what we may understand concerning the spiritual life.

Thus, it should motivate us to pray even more for ourselves concerning spiritual matters — love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, & self-control — because they can effect our well-being on a physical level. The insights into the spiritual domain also allows connection with the Divine in a most intimate manner. And that level of intimacy goes beyond the simple life concerns as humans: do we not also care about the spiritual necessities? This question & how we answer it will effect our prayer life. And it will effect the blessings that flow from that.

1 Corinthians 13:1-8

1 If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. 3 If I give away all I have, and if I deliver up my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing.

4 Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant 5 or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; 6 it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. 7 Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

8 Love never ends.

If we are endowed by our Maker with all the blessings of Christ; if we are enabled by the Spirit of Christ unto transformation in this new self, as a new creation; if we are emboldened by His Christ to be filled with all manner of Christ — His character & personality, then & only then can we expected to be a blessing unto our neighbors — Love the Lord your God with all your heart, mind, soul, & spirit and Love your neighbor as yourself.

Christ has committed Himself unto our transformation as a new creation not to hoard our blessings from Him nor to keep the blessings from Him to ourselves nor to cling unto Christ as our life at the expense of others around us. Rather, His life-altering death & resurrection for the salvation of our souls was so that His Blessings of eternal, everlasting life would be manifested upon His people in order that, they, so filled with the Holy Spirit, they too could manifest such Divine blessings from Christ unto the people they meet everyday.

In this way, the life of the spiritual impacts the daily living of the everyday — the blessings that flow from Christ unto the Believers’ hearts by way of the Holy Spirit that changes us; that change & transformation manifests unto our daily lives of action & speech & all manners of blessings that flow from us unto the people we meet — friend & foe alike.

Therefore, let us not merely, pray for ourselves unto ourselves, for our sake alone; let us not merely be blessed so that we can hoard it for ourselves & gain benefit to ourselves, for our sake alone. But let the Holy Spirit so transform us that we would have a burden outside ourselves, to benefit those ouside ourselves, in such a way that those outside ourselves, may stand to benefit; even if it means, they benefit in a far greater way than we do.

The Antichrist

1 John 2:21-22

21 I write to you, not because you do not know the truth, but because you know it, and because no lie is of the truth. 22 Who is the liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist, he who denies the Father and the Son.

When we hear or read “the antichrist,” we pause for a minute. Not to reflect, so much as stand in fear & awe. We ask ourselves — “Who is THIS Guy?” Will I be able to see him if he were to appear right in front of me? Is he a physical person or a ghost or a figment of my own imagination? The fact is that it is mentioned throughout the New Testament Epistles or Letters, and thus it is vital that we, at least, wrap our heads around the concept. The aspect of the “antichrist” as being ONE individual is correct because he is mentioned in detail in the Book of Revelation. He is to be feared, there is no doubt about that because he will come like a wolf in sheep’s clothing — in other words, he will look & sound like a believer in Christ but his main desire is to lure many away from Christ until the final day of his destruction when Christ returns.

If this does not scare you, then this should — He is One of Us. He is physically, socially, psychologically, & spiritually one with the visible church. He may be a pastor, an elder, a deacon, or a spiritual brother or sister who speaks as if he/she has been saved for a long while. But he/she is not saved, is not a believer, & does not care about the concerns of Christ. Instead, their sole desire is to wreak tremendous havoc upon the church so that many brothers & sisters as well as would-be brothers & sisters would be turned off & turned away from the church.

If this sounds eerily similar to what is happening to the Roman Catholic Church & the many scandals plaguing them, you are on the right track but are naively incomplete. In other words, it is too simplistic to point the finger at the Roman Catholic Church & reflect upon their scandal & conclude that the words concerning the “antichrist” refers to them alone. Rather, there is a secondary aspect to the word, “antichrist” that the Apostle John wants all Christians everywhere to be concerned & forewarned — they are still among us until the day of Christ’s return.

Why is this? Read verse 22 —

Who is the liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist, he who denies the Father and the Son

Does this phrase refer to only one individual person or entity or does it sound like there are multiple persons? Because the word, “antichrist” here, refers to a collection of people that deny Jesus is the Christ. And these individuals are not outside the church but that they are INSIDE the church. They say they believe in Christ but do not; they say all the right things about Christ but do not believe; they may be in the upper echelons of heirarchical status of the church but fail in themselves that are truly saved. These individuals are whom the Apostle John is warning the church. Immediately, you should feel vulnerable & naked because these persons can do you harm, spiritually.

What can you do about them? Read verse 21 —

I write to you, not because you do not know the truth, but because you know it, and because no lie is of the truth

Christian brother, Christian sister, you are fully armed. Armed with, what, you may ask yourself? The truth. Is that some nebulous truth; some type of archaic truth; a truth that is like the wind — here today & gone tomorrow? No. It is the truth that we have already obtained through a power outside human faculty & intellect — a truth that is real & divine & wholly Trinitarian. In other words, believing in the Lord Jesus Christ does not make you naked to the fact that you are now transformed & left to your own devices. Rather, there is a union, a relationship with the Triune God that makes us wholly powerful to stand against these individuals, who claim to know Christ but clearly do not.

How is it clear that these “antichrists” do not know Christ? Because we have the truth & they do not. If they deny the Christ, they are not one of us. And if they are not one of us, they are not as powerfully surrounded like us. And the reason that they are not, is because they are still dead in their transgressions & sins. And their dead souls cannot conspire against us to rip the fabric of our faith away from the Triune God. Not only this, our transformed souls are indwelt of the Holy Spirit & He will preserve our faith in the face of such denial that we can stand firm & resist whatever false truth & lies & denials of Christ that come from their lips.

Take solace, then, that the power to do all this & more unto our preservation for eternal salvation come not from our own human ability or inability, as if, we must contain such rationality in order to stand firm in the faith. This is not the reality of the Christian life that we have believed, dear brother & sister. The reality is so much richer & more glorious, for the divine God-head has assumed His rightful place within the hearts of His believers so that they never stand alone — He always shares their trials & sufferings & torment — He richly clothes us in Himself & He is richly clothed in the vulnerabilities of our human existence.

Being With Jesus

Reflection by Christina Aguilera

Look at me

You may think you see

Who I really am

But you'll never know me

Every day

It's as if I play a part

Now I see

If I wear a mask

I can fool the world

But I cannot fool my heart

Who is that girl I see

Staring straight back at me?

When will my reflection show

Who I am inside?

This song is sung by the title character, Mulan, a Chinese girl, who feels nothing but shame because she feels that she will never measure up to the enormous standards set by her relatives. As a result, she feels that in order to feel validated & appreciated, Mulan, must wear a facade — a mask — that will hide her true self, her real identity in order to ingratiate herself in her culture & society & at the same time bring honor to her family. And thus provides the impetus for the story to begin — a girl who dresses herself as a man in order to fight for her family & preserve the only surviving male, her father, from military service.

Mulan has figured out that there is a sense of a dual personality going on — there is on the one hand, her natural self, her concealed self that no one appreciates but herself; on the other hand is the revealed self, the mask, that anyone & everyone else around her wishes that she reveals more naturally. But to Mulan, this revealed character that everyone seems to appreciate feels phony & fake to her. There’s nothing ‘real’ about it — its forgery, plain & simple & Mulan must be imprisoned by it.

This is very striking when we compare it to another story of a reflection —

The Story of Narcissus

Day after day, Narcissus stared at the water, in love with his own reflection.

He began to waste away from grief, until one sad morning,

he felt himself dying.

“Goodbye, my love!” he shouted to his reflection.

Do you notice the difference? Mulan & Narcissus are both staring at their reflection but only one of them sees the idealized beauty behind the mask. Is one of them right or are both of them wrong? The answer — they are both right! They are both looking at themselves in the way in which they desire to look themselves — Mulan can only help but to look at the miserable facade & chooses to characterize that facade as ‘ugly’ compared to her real inner self. Narcissus can only help but to look at the facade & see the quintessence of beauty staring straight back at him. Mulan desires not to see the beauty in the facade — Narcissus desires not to see the beauty in his inner being.

And yet we praise Mulan for not being the exact superficial selfish creature as Narcissus evidently presents himself. But is this caricature & characterization a correct one to have?

1 John 2:5-6

5 but whoever keeps his word, in him truly the love of God is perfected. By this we may know that we are in him: 6 whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked.

But whoever keeps His Word, in him truly the Love of God is Perfected! What this means at face value is that obedience to His Word means the perfection of Love in his whole being. Only the person’s inner being or his emotions or is there something else at work? The Love of God exemplified in Galatians 5:22 — For the Fruit of Spirit is Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness, & Self-Control — here, the Apostle Paul spells out in no uncertain terms the exact contra-distinction of those living in the flesh as opposed to those living in the Spirit. Those living in the flesh will exhibit the exact opposite traits from those living in the Spirit.

Thus to be perfected in Love means that both the physical attributes of Love as well as the internal makeup that drives those physical attributes of Love will be perfected. Both the inner self & the outer self will be perfected in Love.

How is this possible & can it be true that we can be wholesome through & through? The answer lies in the very next phrase — By this we may KNOW that we are IN HIM. What this means is that for Christians, there exists a singular oneness with HIM — In Him means nothing less than Christ being indwelt of all the believers in Christ. This is in parallel with the phrase “The Love of God is Perfected.” The machinery that enables Christians to exhibit love that is perfected comes through the 2nd Person of the Trinity, Jesus Christ. In Him, all the Love exudes from His Spirit, the Holy Spirit, into the very hearts of believers.

Furthermore, the word — Keep & Know — are pairs that are intertwined together; to keep His Word means to Know Him. Thus, in this sense of the word ‘to keep’ refers not simply to obedience but also “to have & to hold” — akin to a marriage vow —

“I [ man ] take you [ woman ] as my wife to have & to hold from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness & in fleshhealth to love & to cherish until death do us part.”

This phrase means obedience — faithful, loving obendience. Yet at the same time a loving obedience that exudes from his heart that has been captured by the woman he loves. In this manner, to keep means, in essence, to take possession. And in relationship with Christ, this interplay between the Bride of Christ, the Church, & the Groom, who is the Christ becomes realized.

In relationship with Christ, we do not become overly enamored with the outer flesh that remains with us nor are overly enamored with our inner flesh. Rather, we recognize transformation & regeneration of both our outer bodies & of our inner self because we have taken possession of Christ & Christ has taken possession over us. We no longer live for ourselves unto ourselves alone for our own glory. Now, In Christ Jesus, we live for Him as He lives in us unto His glory & excellence!

Propitiation - Our Divine Mercy

1 John 2:1-2

1 My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. 2 He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world.

“I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin”. What does the Apostle John mean by ‘not sin’? The answer will come depending on whom he is refering to when he writes “little children.” He doesn’t mean to be derogatory rather he is placing a certain emphasis on the nature of human relationships with Christ — we are His Children. The submissive nature of children means that we are in a position of receiving whatever goodness that He intends for us & the best good is for our perfection. Perfect moral, ethical, & behavioral transformation that exalts & praises & worships the Maker of our Perfection not in absence of Him nor absent in our transformation.

Thus there are two things going on with this one statement — the first is our whole & complete salvation through the Blood of Christ; His efficacy in our place poured out for us in order to present us as Holy relics before the throne of God. In this once-for-all sacrifice, in which the Perfect sacrifice, Jesus Christ, has given to us all that we need in the heavenly places so that through Him we have taken possession already of an inheritance that is ours in Christ.

However, we do not presently, in the flesh, have taken possession of it. This is the second implication of this statement — our salvation is ongoing in the pursuit of this possession. On the one hand, we are saved by the Blood of Jesus; on the other hand, so long as we live presently in this flesh, we are being perfected in ever-greater excellence in all the manner of life — moral, ethical, & behavioral — that there will exist imperfections, weaknesses, vulnerabilities, & sin that need to be identified & rectified completely. Therefore, the Apostle John cannot mean to Christians that we need to be saved everyday of our lives in order for us NOT to sin. That would do away with the once-for-all sufficiency of Christ’s death & resurrection. He has died & resurrected once, He will not need to do it over again. Once you’re saved you are saved for all eternity.

But what needs to take place for every Christian is maturity IN the Blood of Chrust. This cannot mean for non-Christians that they can posses this every increasing perfection absent the Blood of Christ upon their life. This cannot mean that non-Christians can do what Christians are expected to do & perform through the Blood of Jesus. That is impossible! Rather, the exhortation of the Apostle John to the church is this :

To non-Christians — do not be blind & ignorant of the sin that surrounds you & indwells you, there is yet still a Savior, Christ Jesus, who has availed Himself for you in your place & have freely offered Himself in order to place upon Him the many sins that surround you & indwells you. Allow Him to change & transform your heart so that you may yet be able to please Him perfectly & completely. I exhort you to believe on Him, who is your life & accept Him into your heart.

To Christians — do not be blind & ignorant of the sin that surrounds you & indwells you, there is yet still a Savior, Christ Jesus, who has availed Himself for you in your place & have freely offered Himself in order to place upon Him the many sins that surround you & indwells you. Allow Him to change & transform your heart so that you may yet be able to please Him perfectly & completely. I exhort you to believe on Him, who is your life.

What was the difference between the statements? The only difference that you should see is that to the non-Christian, there is an obvious call to receiving the Lord Jesus. For the Christian, such a call is not necessary. Why? Because the very definition of a Christian is that this individual have already received Christ into their hearts already — salvation is no longer necessary. But the sustenance of His Grace & the sanctification of their souls unto excellence must be taking place. The Indwelling Nature of the Presence of the Holy Spirit will not allow Christians to descend into sinfulness into perpetuity. This will end.

There is no doubt about that — if you are saved by the Blood of Christ, the Holy Spirit desires that we mirror & reflect Christ & that can only occur through the presence of His Spirit & the means of Grace He provides through the Scriptures, Prayer, the Sacraments, & the Preaching of the Word. In all of these, He utilizes in order to ensure our progression in the Spirit — that is what propitiation means for us & to us.

Upon the Christ on the Cross propitiation is the wrath of a powerful God meting out divine judgment upon His only Son. But for us, as Christ received the wrath & judgment upon His Body by the Father, His Righteousness for us — Christ’s Righteosuness for us — His Own Righteousness for us, was poured into our hearts. This made us alive once-for-all & keeps us in His divine Favor forever. And yet, that is not all — Christ was the propitiation for ALL our sins : Our Past Sins, Our Present Sins, & Our Future Sins. As we are presently, living this life in the flesh, all the sins we have yet to commit have been forgiven on the Cross of Christ. This is why it is still all the more important to ask the Lord for forgiveness of sins everyday & continue in His Grace through the maturing of our Spiritual Nature.

Where Is The Lord?

Many times in our Christian experience, we want to cry out — “If only I had been there, I would be able to believe far better than my current situation.” There seems to be a quest of attempting to renew our experience over and over again in order to validate our salvation. Thus icons become very meaningful & very powerful. Icons, by themselves, are neutral. We fully understand them to be earthly objects containing nothing whatever of any ethereal or divine material. Yet, we impute in them — or we give to them — the power that these objects do not naturally, inherently, & by themselves contain. We give to them the stature of divine-like essence in order to feel both validated & perfected. This was never the intention of God, that we would displace & misrepresent anything in heaven or on earth of possessing such virtue. We were always & forever to believe in God & Himself alone without having to impute divine attributes that belong to Him alone.

Therefore, we must be careful in our spiritual experiences that we do not displace God; that we do not misrepresent Him in any way by holding to objects & even spiritual experiences as THE object for our sanctification. He mercifully grants awesome experiences for us to have; He allows these feelings & emotions to overcome us & overwhelm us. BUT they are not meant for the chase nor the pursuit. He has granted these things so that in them & through them we may be led to Him. Such is the same as the Cross, the Bread, & the Cup. These are strong powerful icons & images that display the glory of the risen Christ in His fullness & in His excellence. But, lest we forget, they are NOT Christ. They lead us to Christ; they speak about Him; they bring us to the person of whom we are really supposed to be honoring. These objects, themselves, do not have any power to save & contain no power of themselves for sanctification. They are signs & symbols of His most marvelous Grace. And as signs & symbols they point to the person of Christ — He is the One we are meant to celebrate & glorify!

In the light of this encouragement, let’s read the following —

2 Kings 2:14

14 Then he took the cloak of Elijah that had fallen from him and struck the water, saying, “Where is the LORD, the God of Elijah?” And when he had struck the water, the water was parted to the one side and to the other, and Elisha went over.

There are three (3) parts to this verse :

1. Then he took the cloak of Elijah that had fallen from him

The imagery is evocative. It is meant to stir the imagination as if we were there with Elisha. We are to be whisked away in that moment of pure exhilaration when the joy of seeing with our own eyes the moment Elijah is taken up into heaven & at the same instant feel the loneliness & emptiness of the loss. Elisha is alone. But he has as a possession, Elijah’s cloak. This is the moment; the nexus of Elisha’s ministry begins right here — will he now take the cloak & impute unto it the pure divine quality that we all think Elisha does in this circumstance. Or will he choose to accept the obvious — it is Elijah’s cloak; it is not Elisha’s decision to impute unto the cloak divine powers.

But there is something else that also stirs the Christian Mind — and that is the powerful imagery of Christ, who He, Himself, transfigured on the mount to His disciples, James, Peter, & John. They saw for the first time what Jesus had been saying all along — that He is the Christ the Son of the Living God. It is through His message of His Gospel that we understand that all blessings flow from the Bounty that is IN Christ Jesus. Literally, He indwells believers into their hearts such that we possess Him in our bodies inasmuch as we are surrounded by His presence.

This aspect of our Christian reality is why the Apostle Paul can write :

Ephesians 4:21-24

as the truth is in Jesus, 22 to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, 23 and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, 24 and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.

To Put Off our Old Self, like a cloak & to Put On our New Self, like a new cloak. This imagery brings us back to that point in Elisha where he is holding onto Elijah’s cloak & the analogy fits the description. Here, Elijah is the Christ-figure fore-shadowing that day when all believers of Jesus would do spiritually that which Elisha is doing physically — to take hold of Jesus as their cloak & reality & put Him on. He is their new mentality; their new reality; their new identity.

2. ”Where is the Lord, the God of Elijah?”

Does He exist in the present? Is He here, right this moment? Is He here with me? Or is He someone that only lives in heaven & cannot dwell with earthly beings? It seems quite innocuous to ask especially for us modern contemporary people where we do not routinely observe large bronze statues of gods in the middle of our cities & town halls. But someone like Elisha, idols were everywhere & every place as routine & as common as the community well to fetch drinking water. So routine & so common in fact that to not have an idol & especially to believe in a god that does not have an image was both ludicrous & preposterous. Why was this so? Because everything in the observable universe is supposed to have an image, including gods, so they reasoned. Their image was important so that the people would know what the gods looked like & to also feel that the gods were with them. It made worship a lot easier & people knew for certain where the gods were living & residing.

On the flip side to this rationale, the people wanted to control persons & circumstances. By creating idols, you can control the gods with the palm of your hand — with one blow you can destroy the idol or through mastery of a craft you can create a pantheon of gods in your image. Elisha knew by watching his ‘father’ being taken into heaven, Elisha was dealing with something totally different — this is THE God you do not deal with in the customary manner. As an Israelite, what Elisha just witnessed was something special & he knew it — after all, in the previous verses, we find that Elisha asked for this grand spectacle as a sign that God would grant his wish — a double portion of Elijah’s spirit.

3. And when he had struck the water, the water was parted to the one side and to the other, and Elisha went over.

Elisha struck the water with Elijah’s cloak — or Elisha hit the water with Elijah’s cloak. What is going on here? The language used here is similar to Moses striking the rock in order for water to gush forth in two (2) situations : Numbers 17 & Numbers 20.

In Numbers 17, God commands Moses to stand on the rock & strike the rock in order to spring forth water. In this circumstance, the Lord God is teaching a powerful & moving imagery of what salvation looks like. God will strike the Rock in judgment & because of that judgment satiated or satisfied or propitiated the anger & wrath of a Righteous God, the Rock will spring forth the blessing of water unto the congregation of the people who believe in this Rock. That Rock is Christ. And it is He that the Apostle mentions in the following :

1 Corinthians 10:1-4

1 For I do not want you to be unaware, brothers, that our fathers were all under the cloud, and all passed through the sea, 2 and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea, 3 and all ate the same spiritual food, 4 and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank from the spiritual Rock that followed them, and the Rock was Christ.

The second situation in Numbers 20 was different. In this passage, Moses strikes the rock twice in disobedience to the Lord’s command, which was initially to stand on the rock with his brother Aaron & to speak to it. The Lord God was furious against Moses for this disobedience & barred him from entering the Promised Land. But why was this so? Was God being petty? Not at all. If the imagery in Numbers 17 was to display how salvation was to occur through the judgment of God upon the Rock, which would then release its purifying waters unto the congregation of the people, then what Moses did was a disruption of that imagery by signifying & teaching the congregation that God would have to pronounce judgment & salvation continuously, not once for all. As a result, Moses displayed that following the Law sufficed for salvation but God was teaching that salvation came through faith. Thus it was Joshua, whose name means, Salvation, that led the congregation of the people to the Promised Land & in this way, God was teaching them that it is God once for all & always that will be leading the congregation unto salvation.

Elisha strikes the water, signifying judgment upon the water on Elisha’s behalf. The cloak signifies the Christ & it is He that strikes the water allowing the water to part in the same way that the Israelites crossed the Red Sea. The Exodus narrative is analogous to our Christ on the Cross as the reference point for salvation. And thus, Elisha quite literally crossed over from death to life; from not believing & having faith in Yahweh God to believing & having faith in Yahweh God.

How often do we regard our salvation as the crucial point in our lives that we can look upon that day fondly? And I am not speaking about your day of salvation — that moment in your life that you accepted Jesus. Rather, that moment in Biblical history when Christ died on the Cross & rose again on the third day. After all, this is the moment we celebrate the Bread & the Cup during the Communion. We do not commemorate everyone’s special day when they received Christ. We bring glory, honor, worship, & praise to the One whom we celebrate that saved us & given us the bounty of heaven through His Body.

Thus, contrary to Elisha, we no longer have to ask — “Where is the Lord?” — because we ought to know through the renewal of our hearts & minds to Him that He dwells within us by His Spirit. We have a Fellowship with Him & with the Triune God-head forever both now & into eternity. So how often do we reckon that day for ourselves? We should do so everyday, both as a remembrance & as a reminiscence, for the Apostle Paul writes that we were there with Him on the Cross, when we received Him into our hearts & we were there with Him when He arose, when we received the salvation of our souls unto Him.

And Behold, The Lord Passed By

“And if it be thus fit that God should have a supreme regard to himself, then it is fit that this supreme regard should appear in those things by which he makes himself known, or by his word and works, i.e. in what he says, and in what he does. If it be an infinitely amiable [i.e., pleasant, admirable] thing in God that he should have a supreme regard to himself, then it is an amiable [i.e., pleasant, admirable] thing that he should act as having a chief regard to himself, or act in such a manner as to show that he has such a regard: that what is highest in God’s heart may be highest in his actions and conduct. And if it was God’s intention, as there is great reason to think it was, that his works should exhibit an image of himself their author, that it might brightly appear by his works what manner of being he is, and afford a proper representation of his divine excellencies, and especially his moral excellence, consisting in the disposition of his heart; then it is reasonable to suppose that his works are so wrought as to show this supreme respect to himself, wherein his moral excellence primarily consists” (The End For Which God Created The World, Edwards, Jonathan, 38).

What is Jonathan Edwards saying here?

In sum, God must be constant & consistent in both His word & His actions. And in that constancy & consistency in both His words & actions there is of the highest & most excellent quality of God being exhibited. Anything less than the excellencies of God being exhibited in His manifestations of His being & nature would simply be against His being & nature as God. Thus, His being & nature cannot but exhibit the highest quality of His being God no matter the word; no matter the action. In contradistinction, human beings, we inherently cannot dispose of ourselves in such a consistent manner such that our words & actions form the conjunction of who we are, rather our words & actions are a pattern of disjunction that in & of themselves reveal a major & catastrophic short-fall of both our being & essence. We can further elaborate, that the inconsistency of our words & actions reveal our most fallen estate that the disjunction between our words & actions are supremely not like God.

This pattern of quality of both being & essence in human beings reveals the state of who we are & how far we have become since God created Humans in the Garden. And that revelation has been undone through the presence of sin that have taken away the excellencies of that marvelous created aspect in God — The revealing of His glory unto Humankind’s nature & being. It is not in God to perform in words & actions without fore-thought & as if without thinking; it is not in God to speak beforehand as if He has some kind of nature to become spontaneous & reckless at the same time. If He performs any action whether word or deed they have been carefully thought out until the most excellencies of God have been revealed. Because it is unto His glory that His every movement should manifest His divine excellence at all times.

“And if it was God’s intention, that his works should exhibit an image of himself their author and afford a proper representation of his divine excellencies consisting in the disposition of his heart; then it is reasonable to suppose that his works show this supreme respect to himself.”

All of God’s works — His manner of speech & His manner of action — display both the wonder & glory of His excellence! The simple fact that humans do not, reveal, not a mystery, but rather, that there exists a spiritual & divine disjunction. The manner of both being & essence has been tarnished to such an extent that the objects of His glory neither reflect that glory nor is able to shine that glory inherently reverently to the One who had enabled them in the beginning. If in fact we had this ability to reflect that Glory unto ourselves the unmistakeable voice & excellencies of God would be both comforting & securing. As it is, we become like Elijah —

1 Kings 19:11-12
1 And [ The Lord ] said, “Go out & stand on the mount before the LORD.” And behold, the LORD PASSED BY, & a great & strong wind tore the mountains & broke in pieces the rocks before the LORD, but the LORD was not IN the wind. And after the wind an earthquake, but the LORD was not IN the earthquake. 12 And after the earthquake a fire, but the LORD was not IN the fire. And after the fire the sound of a low WHISPER.

Take note of the capitalized words. They reveal both a confounding & startling mystery — the Lord God is present but how He is present is a picture. That image should immediately force us to conclude that the personality & character of God is at stake. The Lord God passed by but He passed by in such a way that He was not IN the wind, earthquake, & fire. In other words, these manner of normal earthly catastrophes, the presence of God is absent. Yet the manner displays a live divine being — the evidence that He is on the move. God’s nature & essence is such that He is not a God of destruction nor a destroyer of worlds. He does not present Himself as the most powerful being in the cosmos — that is the human conundrum coming to reality in us through the person of Elijah.

What was Elijah’s expectation after the battle on Mount Carmel? It would have been the same expectation that you or I would have had — to displace all the abject idolatry; destroy all the enemies of God; supplant everyone that does not bow the knee to Yahweh God. But what was His response? A whisper. In all of the chaos & destruction, they do nothing to present peace. But a whisper does. He displaces our expectations & our thoughts about God & forces us to reckon with His character & personality & nature & being — that He is most excellent in something so simple as a whisper. Take careful note here : He is not acting as if He is powerless like a whisper. Rather, He is demonstrating the irony that like a powerless whisper He will use that meaninglessness & insignificance in the human conscience in order to make a nation unto Himself; in demonstration of the whisper, God will utilize the weakest & the most powerless instrument in order to transform & renew hearts & minds to God; to demonstrate the glories of His most excellent nature & essence of being He will display Himself through the most powerless instrument of the human material universe.

In this way, salvation will come to the weak & to the powerless & the mute & to the stone cold hearts of the One revealed Christ, who is the whisper personified. If God can only display & manifest the glories of His excellencies at all times & everywhere, then what is Christ? That being of eternal excellence of God in human flesh that only those hearts changed & renewed can only fathom Him with such supreme renewal that a miracle must take place. And indeed every salvation unto Christ is a miracle as the words of Him is simply nothing but mysterious noise come into full resonance & melody through the presence of the Holy Spirit, through whom we have received the transformation that God had sought from the beginning. A renewal of hearts & minds unto God displaying the richness of His all encompassing greatness & excellencies of His nature & being.

Oh, that we, His people, His congregation, can listen to the voice of Him who died & resurrected — the voice of the whisper that reveals the character & nature of God in human form. A human form that we humans would not have recognized —

Isaiah 53:1-3
1 Who has believed what he has heard from us?
And to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed?
2 For he grew up before him like a young plant,
and like a root out of dry ground;
he had no form or majesty that we should look at him,
and no beauty that we should desire him.
3 He was despised and rejected by men,
a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief;
and as one from whom men hide their faces
he was despised, and we esteemed him not.

Does this sound like a Messiah? Does this have an appearance of a Savior? Do these words convey hopefulness or hopelessness? Does this speak into the conundrum of our hearts — how do you reveal yourself, oh Lord? The Christ is supposed to be unrecognizable; He is supposed to be concealed; He is supposed to be weak & insignificant; He has no voice nor words — for He is the whisper personified.

The Rainfall

There can be too much rainfall & not enough rainfall as both can create awful & potentially hazardous conditions — too much rain can result in flooding, which by themselves can destroy a complete harvest or seedlings; not enough rain can result in drought, which is a condition where there is little to no ground water in reserve to utilize for plants & other vegetation. Moreover, rainfall is necessary to sustain humans & animals as each require the necessary amount of water in their system to sustain & maintain life. It almost seems inconsequential to us in these modern times to talk about rainfall because we believe there is plenty of it — what is the worry about floods, drought, famine, & groundwater shortage, when we live in a society free of such concerns? Until, the recent headlines in The New York Times & The Wall Street Journal have all cited concerns about the lack of rainfall in recent years.

Furthermore, according to The New York Times article in August 21, 2021 :

“The latest map from the drought monitor shows that 90 percent of what it considers the West — California, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Montana — is in drought. Conditions are “severe” or “exceptional” in about half of the region. Colorado, Wyoming, Southwestern Texas and North and South Dakota are also affected.”

And this from The Wall Street Journal in August 16, 2021:

“The federal government has declared the first-ever shortage of water on the Colorado River, triggering cutbacks in several states that will hit farmers particularly hard during a drought that has punished the Southwest with little letup since the turn of the century. The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation made the declaration Monday after forecasting that Nevada’s Lake Mead, the river’s biggest reservoir, would remain below 1,075 feet above sea level—the mark previously set to trigger mandatory cutbacks—through at least early next year. As of Monday, Lake Mead measured 1,068 feet, the lowest since the reservoir was created by construction of the Hoover Dam in the 1930s. The bureau estimates the level will dip further to 1,066 by Jan. 1 next year.”

We are living in unprecedented times, my fellow Brothers & Sisters. And this doesn’t even include the wildfires raging in the West nor the increase in hurricanes we have had in the past two years. What to make of all of this?

First, this is not unusual — there have been times like these in the past; not recent past but Biblical past.

Second, there is accruing evidence of man-made impacts to climate & the degradation of our natural resources.

Third, the answer to those man-made impacts is the result of the sinfulness of humankind — our pride in taking from the earth & believing for so long that that would not degrade our planet; our pride that we could live so long on the earth believing that such natural resources would continue in perpetuity; our pride in depraving other animals of the same natural resources & thereby neglecting & abdicating our responsibility to be caretakers of this earth.

Ever since the Fall of Man in Genesis 3, there have been wanton irresponsibility, carelessness, & human sinfulness that have brought the degradation of our planet with us. And thus, we should not be shocked. We should be ashamed what our actions have wrought upon the earth!

There is a limit to our time on earth & earth itself will not last. Therefore, let us turn our eyes upon Him & unto His Face that will grant some mercy & reprieve from our restless hearts lest we be buried under false hope & devastating news of further destruction & catastrophe.

1 Kings 18:43-45

43 And he said to his servant, “Go up now, look toward the sea.” And he went up and looked and said, “There is nothing.” And he said, “Go again,” seven times. 44 And at the seventh time he said, “Behold, a little cloud like a man's hand is rising from the sea.” And he said, “Go up, say to Ahab, ‘Prepare your chariot and go down, lest the rain stop you.’” 45 And in a little while the heavens grew black with clouds and wind, and there was a great rain.

This little interlude occurs after the great battle on Mount Carmel between the prophets of Ba’al & the Prophet Elijah. Three times he had the servants pour water upon his altar & three times they acted upon his request. Then Elijah called upon Yahweh God — The God of Abraham ( Our God the Father ); The God of Isaac ( Our God the Son ); The God of Jacob ( Our God the Holy Spirit ) — to call the people of Israel into remembrance & reminiscence. And thus the fire of heaven was such that it scorched everything upon the altar including drying up the water in the trench that surrounded the altar.

The Lord God wanted the people to see not only THAT He alone was God. He wanted to declare HOW He is God — the declaration upon the altar makes plain that there exists no other being beside God. He requires a sacrifice of such divine proportions that could equate to His Power & His Glory. The Fire from heaven is both a demonstration of His Justice & His Mercy all at the same time. It is because of His Justice that forces us to look upon Him as both the reason for our fear & the answer to our fear. His Mercy, frees us from God’s dispensing His almighty wrath upon us & onto someone else who has the power to withstand such divine magnificence.

And thus the water poured upon the altar is that representation of Christ. He is the water that is poured out for us. And He alone stands face to face with God the Father receiving from Him what we justly deserve. THAT is mercy. And with that dawns a new beginning — renewal & recompense. But even better, Newness of Life!

THAT is what the interlude in 1 Kings 18:43-45, means — take note that after this climactic battle the rains began to fall upon Israel once again. The rain signify new life that will be created upon the water’s flow. And they demonstrate to us how salvation works in the sight of this awesome spectacle. The power that withheld the rains from falling; the power that engulfed the altar & the water that surrounded it; the power that sent the rains to begin falling again upon the land, is & always shall be the same power that transforms hearts of stone into hearts of flesh; that transforms dead souls into live souls; that indwells every believer through the power of the Holy Spirit.

It is the same power & the glory of the same power that dwells inside of us. And that glory is demonstrated refreshingly upon the believers, who hold onto this truth for themselves individually. But it becomes an ever-increasing glory that engulfs everyone when the believers join heart to heart with each other & with their Christ to hold to the responsibility to be responsible caretakers of all that God created upon the face of the earth. And to do for it that which cannot do for itself because of the dawning of the Fall of Man, the entire creation is groaning for the Sons & Daughters of God to show themselves at such a time as this & to speak for creation upon the Lord God, who created it in the first place.

That we should love & be compassionate toward our spouses, our families, our loved ones, our career, our places of business, & our church — these are generally what we pray & think about foremost. But I plead as an extension of the lesson of 1 Kings 18:43-45 — to pray fervently with our hearts content that the rains will fall to bring renewal & the newness of life — both figuratively & literally. To restore our hearts with joy of new rain but also to restore our livelihoods through the rains that are so badly needed both in this country & throughout the world.

The True North Of Our Being

“THERE IS NO GREATER JOY THAN TO HAVE AN ENDLESSLY CHANGING HORIZON, FOR EACH DAY TO HAVE A NEW & DIFFERENT SUN”

( Christopher McCandless )

Christopher McCandless was a wilderness explorer, who graduated from Emory University in Goergia. Upon graduation he gave away his trust fund, which had accrued to $24,000, burned whatever money that was remaining in his possession, & disappeared into the vast expanse of the unknown. In September 1992, a hunter found his dead & decomposing body inside an abandoned bus. Among the items that was discovered was his journal that detailed his travels as well as the food items that Chris ate that may have contributed to his death. In 2007, Jon Krakauer, a noted adventurist, journalist, & author, wrote a book, “Into The Wild” chronicling the life & journeys of Christopher McCandless.

For whatever opinion we may have concerning his life, one thing is for certain — his quote above chronicles the mind of every person. His, is not unlike many of us, indeed, we all wish some type of inexpressable joy everyday of our lives. And it is certainly true that we seek adventure of the mind & heart as well as the physical audacity of going into the wild.

Take note then, how many parents chronicle the first moments of their newborn infant or how mothers & fathers wish to document & film every “first” that the newborn accomplishes. It is rich in joy — as much as it is for the infant, it seems even more so for the parents. Does this not prove some deal of merit to the chase? The chasing after that rich joy of the “endelessly changing horizon”? Does he mean that literally? Obviously, there is only one horizon with one sun, thus this is an example of metphorical hyperbole — you cannot have more than one horizon & more than one sun.. unless.. You change your perspective & change your trajectory time & again.

Experiences with different people; experiences in different climates & weather patterns; experiences with different traditions & cultures; experiences with different food items & food tastes. There is a myriad of ways in which humans can engage their world & seek the different in such a degree that certain joys of immense proportion can certainly arise. But not many of us would be bold enough to venture past our front porch in search of it.

Which begs the question? Why Alaska, of all places? This is the location of Chris’ last moments on earth. There are many theories on the web & they all make sense. But I think, Chris was in search of something far more than simply experiencing the journey of this material human existence. Certainly, he wanted to escape abuse & flee the hurt & evil that he had experienced during his precious time prior to graduation. And indeed, that hurt & evil was as real an experience as he wanted to obtain joy to the very opposite degree.

But Chris could have obtained all this traveling as far south as he could go. Yet, he was determined to go north. That determination led him to that abandoned bus & it seems that he wanted to live out his days in that bus seeking whatever joy that will come after. Seeking whatever joy that will come after.. Think about that for a second. What joy that will come after? It seems to me that Chris was seeking something far more than material — he was seeking something more ethereal; something beyond him, his life, & this material universe. He was seeking a place beyond. He couldn’t describe what it was or what, in fact, he was seeking. Yet, he was seeking something that existed beyond the temporal spectrum of living & seeking an idea, a concept, or even a thought of a universe that existed beyond this one.

In my opinion, what Christopher McCandless was seeking — true north.

To discover that the moral compass of every human being lay elsewhere beyond the horizon; that the moral compass that he wished to obtain was obtainable through meditation & the right mindset; that the moral compass he wished to have was the same moral compass that everyone wished to have. Except that that is not true. Not everyone travels to Alaska to bask in the glory of finally obtaining their moral compass. No. We travel to Alaska to bask in the glory & riches of the beauty of the natural world. And in that richness we find ourselves & glory in ourselves of having found it. Chris was not seeking that. He wanted more than that. And he was willing to die for that which he wanted to seek — die until he found what he was looking for.

A compass, I learnt when I was surveying, it'll... it'll point you True North from where you're standing, but it's got no advice about the swamps and dessert and chasm that you'll encounter along the way. If in pursuit of your destination, you plunge ahead, heedless of obstacles, and achieve nothing more than to sink in a swamp... What's the use of knowing True North? ( ‘Lincoln,’ 2012 )

If there is a moral compass that exists in every human, then this quote should give rise to some hair-raising exclamations. Because knowing true north does not help you in the immediate necessities of living — indeed the swamps, obstacles, & deserts that lay in the path as we know the direction of true north does not manage our affairs of actually getting there. In this case, there is something value-less of knowing true north — what is the purpose of moral compass if in the possession of it that compass cannot lead us to where we want to go?

Oftentimes, this is almost equivalent of our understanding of Christianity. In some ways, religiously, we seek that compass, our true north by attending church & becoming as religiously adept as possible. We are often confused as to why that does not change our behavior or change our mentality or change or disposition. We forget & we must be reminded always — the object is Christ. Not our change; not our transformation; not even our good, moral compass that we all want to obtain.

Revelation 22:16

16 “I, Jesus, have sent MY Angel to TESTIFY to you about THESE THINGS for the Churches. I am the ROOT & the Descendant of David, the BRIGHT MORNING STAR”

There is nothing wrong with wanting change, transformation, & a moral compass, but in, & of themselves, they are of no value to us. They can present barriers to the true object — immortality & eternal life. And who can provide these but Christ, Himself. In the everyday menial boredom, we can soon forget that the advancement of the human life is nothing more than the pursuit of the betterment of ourselves. But Christ is the Morning Star! Lest we forget & better still that we will be reminded as often as we may dare that it is He that is the true object.

In all the ruminations of humankind; in all the thoughts that we may have concerning a moral compass & true north, the life that Chris McCandless sought is right within our grasp. There is not a chasing after the wind or attempting to journey off into the forgotten wilderness or lend yourselves to a ceaseless mind into the vast reaches of the subconscious. In all these objects the chase is the same — finding our compass. And THAT compass is Christ. It never changes. The thought remains the same — Always Christ!

Believe on Him & what He has done for you — died on the Cross for your sins & resurrected to eternal glory so that you & I can possess the object of our lives. The richness & the joys of living in this material universe can be found. In the Christ, He enables in us that thought & mind of seeing the world in the way in He wants us to see the world. The observable universe is filled with His glory & excellence! Why would He want to hide that from us? Only in the Son Of God, the Christ, can we be filled with the enourmous expanse of the created world.

He emboldens us to share in that richly, for it is not unto us & for us individually but for all to share in the wonders of this world. This enormous expanse however temporal is nothing but a morsel of the infinite joy we will possess on the other side of eternity. The Christ sharpens our minds & renews our focus in Him, that in all we see are but the glimpses of His Face.

He empowers us through the presence of the Holy Spirit. This is His restorative power; the transforming grace; the renewal of our hearts to Christ. We are not at this alone, there is a real presence & a real power dwelling inside every one of us, who calls Jesus as Lord. It is why all things are for Him & to Him because it is from Him we have all the things that are in the fullness of Him. What this means is that in possession of Christ, we will have all the joys of the immensity of Heaven. The glory that spills out from the bosom of Christ comes to us into overflow because of the Christ we have in us.

Therefore, Brothers & Sisters, the object is Christ. Receive Him, Know Him, & Love Him with all adoration! And see what Joys He may instill in us all!

Surely God would not have created such a being as man, with an ability to grasp the infinite, to exist only for a day! No, no, man was made for immortality.

( Abraham Lincoln )

Prophet, Priest, & King -- Why Do I Need It?

Very rarely, if ever do we really seriously consider the attachments & relationships that we encounter throughout all our days. This means the most significant attachments as well as the least significant, which we call, acquaintances. Normally, we think of these attachments & relationships to arise out of thin air — a pure happenstance or luck even. Never do we realize how organic they are; that they occur mainly because we have shared & common interests; shared & common ideas; the same & common mindset concerning life. These attachments & relationships are important, we know that, and yet our experiences are filled with poor to even really bad relationships — why? Is it because we do not think through well enough? Or is it more simply the result of our DNA that links to bad & terrible people in our life that cause us harm? Or maybe its even simpler than that really — we assume a lot of relationships as being organic. This means we assume a lot about the other person, as if, they are organically like us in some real way. But they are not.

There is a saying — “opposites attract” — why is this true of our human experience? Because we know in some sense there is an in-organic way attachments & relationships arise. In some meaningful way, attachments & relationships do not occur out of thin air but are worked out gradually over time such that in that real time & space we come to realize how organic two people have gotten together for so long. But that doesn’t answer the corollary — why do we yet experience terrible relationships & terrible people in our life that care not for our well-being & livelihood? Certainly, we do not walk around looking for terrible people that do us harm; nor do we wake up every morning in search of relationships with such people. We assume that whomever we engage with that the other person shares the same thought, mind, & attitude. And the sad reality is that sometimes they do not, and when we realize that, oftentimes, it is almost too late to escape from the hurt that will arise.

Thus, attachments & relationships do matter & they matter a lot — so much so, that it should be mind-boggling to all of us why we do not pay closer attention to all the people we meet & engage with on a daily basis.

Consider all the necessities that human relationships require — they depend on three (3) most important & vital objects or else all relationships will fail — Security, Communication, & Affliction.

  1. SECURITY

No matter the stability in our own lives, an insecure relationship will cause us tremendous heart-wrenching turmoil that will infect every area of our life. Thus to be safe & to feel safe is the paramount object in any relationship — we do not seek harm unless that other person causes that harm unto us & happens to us because we trust that person to care for our well-being as much as we do ourselves. Without this, there is no relationship.

Now consider, these following Bible passages about Kingship —

KING — Ezekiel 37:22
22 And I will make them one nation in the land, on the mountains of Israel. And one king shall be king over them all, and they shall be no longer two nations, and no longer divided into two kingdoms.

John 18:33-37
33 So Pilate entered his headquarters again and called Jesus and said to him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” 34 Jesus answered, “Do you say this of your own accord, or did others say it to you about me?” 35 Pilate answered, “Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests have delivered you over to me. What have you done?” 36 Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would have been fighting, that I might not be delivered over to the Jews. But my kingdom is not from the world.” 37 Then Pilate said to him, “So you are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For this purpose I was born and for this purpose I have come into the world—to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.”

Is the only purpose of a king is to rule over the people? Or is one of the objects of a king as ruler is so that he becomes the very necessity by which all are safeguarded under his care? A watchful eye that never closes; a sleepless night that always hangs over him. To be a king & to be a successful one at that, is that by his rule he will make sure all are safely within his grasp at all times & the might he uses will dismay & destroy all enemies foreign & domestic.

Therefore, why do we need a king? Because there are objects in the spiritual realm & dangers that haunt us in the night & daytime sky that we cannot safely ensure our own well-being at all times. A king is necessitated for that simple welfare. But more than that really — there is a rule over us that we negate & despise; a rule that is as real as our own lives we wish to determine. That rule is the paramount object of both our downfall & destruction. Unless THIS is remedied in some way we are subject to that awesome terrible calamity to all enemies of the Kingdom of God.

2. COMMUNICATION

And not just any communication either — real & authentic communication. Communicaton that seeks more than mere conversation about whatever that is meaningless but seeks to strive at the right balance of healing & joyful exuberance. Communication that demeans & is sometimes purposeful in its hurtfulness, a relationship cannot long last because it will start to tear down the walls of trust & security. Anytime lies are proved from the mouth that display evidence of ingenuineness, that wall of security further erodes until all the manner of speaking & talking that sounds like communication are just nothing but sound & wind coming from the person that is no longer trusted.

Thus authentic & real communication furthers not only a bond of relationship but also more importantly builds up the wall of trust. So much so in fact, that once a lie is told once, it matters not how many truthful things that were spoken in the past because the mind will always gravitate to the one lie that was spoken. It is always important to speak the truth; it always important to speak our minds; but it more important to be genuine in how we speak because what we say & do have consequences to the other person listening to us. Furthermore, trust builds even more when we speak in a way that allows the other to feel welcomed & welcoming into the conversation. In this manner, communication must be both thoughtful & well-thought-out. Think before speaking; listening before talking; thinking before saying any comment.

Now consider, these following Bible passages about the Prophets —

PROPHET — Hebrews 1:1-2
1 Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, 2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world.

Hosea 12:10
10 I spoke to the prophets;
it was I who multiplied visions,
and through the prophets gave parables.

Why do we need a prophet? The simplistic answer is that we need someone to speak for God. Apparently, God did not speak for Himself to everyone in the Old Testament thus necessitating this role. But there is another aspect — speaking the truth about God. The main problem about this office of prophet is that almost anyone could claim to be a prophet. Thus they could lie & deceive about God — one would say one thing about God another person would claim just the opposite. How in the world would anyone know the truth about this God? How can truth be maintained at all? The prophets of God were given special qualities & special gifts that differentiates between the Old & New Testaments. Quite frankly, there was a certain mystery that the prophets of God contained that were not revealed until the Apostles in the New Testament. Thus their abilities must be understood as being both qualitatively different from the Apostles because they were both tasked with two different agendas.

Because the Holy Spirit did not come in force until the Pentecost, the words of the prophets were vital in speaking for God to the people — in a way, they were the physical representation of the Holy Spirit — they spoke the truth about God, spoke the conscience of God, spoke for the people to God, & mainly prayed over the people, for the people, & adjured the people into solemn repentance.

Why was this all necessary? Because they, the prophets of God understood from the Heart of God, that there existed a disconnect — a chasm of relationship that existed that God wished to be merged. A heart of God that sought out the remedy & wished to share that remedy by sharing how He will go about remedying the breach. If a probem exists in human relationships, what is the first thing we seek? A remedy through conversation. We want to talk about it until there is a resolution. How is this different than the way in which God wanted to remedy the problem with humans?

3. AFFLICTION

Take a moment & consider your most significant relationship. Think about how that relationship have survived & fostered through the years — time & distance travelled; money & cost well-spent. We took the time to make sure our most treasured relationships would thrive. Think about that. We took the time. This means we sacrificed long & hard about the relationship we want to make certain will survive; we took the necessary means out of our own welfare to make sure certain relationships would last forever. In fact, what we did is called Affliction — we shared a burden. We took on the necessary pain & turmoil of our most significant partners & put that on ourselves. And we didn’t want to do that with anybody — we are very selective about that. Only the most special ones take an aspect of ourselves so that we take on the personality of the one that means the most to us. And of course, that other someone does the same — we share in the affliction. Now, of course, we will not call it that — we have other names for it :

In the office, it’s called ‘responsibility’; in the home, it’s called ‘duty, anxieties, worry, stress, & burden’; if we are a student, it’s called ‘work or trials or test’ — but whatever we want to name it, it is all ‘AFFLICTION.’ It seems even in human relationships, God has made certain that our relationships cannot & will not thrive & survive without it.

Now consider, these following Bible passages about the Priests —

PRIEST — Malachi 4:4
4 “Remember the law of my servant Moses, the statutes and rules that I commanded him at Horeb for all Israel.

1 Peter 2:9
9 But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.

Revelation 1:5-6
To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood 6 and made us a kingdom, priests to his God and Father, to him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.

Why do we need a priest? The Old Testament Priest had a function — a gory function of killing animals for the sole purpose of washing away personal & communal sins. The mere sight of all that blood-letting is to display the sheer volume of blood necessary for God’s redemption. And yet this was only a temporary procedure. God did not mean to enact this ritual for perpetuity — it was also to show that there will be One who take all that volume of blood upon Himself. In this way, the perfect sacrifice will take upon Himself the perfect affliction for all humankind who wishes to be cleansed. That was the demonstration — a perfect insitution of divine relationship.

You see, the priest did not just perform all these rights & rituals so that they could be holier than us or even to show how separate & segregated they were with the congregation of the people. Rather, especially in the garment of the High Priest, we find this illuminating fact — upon his shoulders & his chest are inscribed in stone all the names of the tribes of Israel — that upon him, the high priest, contained all the burdens & afflictions of all the people — that he carried with him & upon himself the wounds of this vast multitude & that his responsibility was to assume their redemption upon his person.

But was this all necessary? And the answer is yes it was because God required it. To remedy the breach that existed between humans & God, this was the remedy He instituted — it was a gory spectacle & one that promoted disdain — why this effusion of blood? But the blood of an animal is not the same as the blood of humans thus it could never be the perfect remedy only partially. Therefore, the person of Christ is chiefly represented here. When we think of sacrifice, we think of Him. But we do not think about the affliction that He Himself carried. In the same way as the high priests of Israel, Christ shouldered the burden upon Himself to the very point of death.

I am reminded in the story of the Cross, when Jesus was carrying the cross through the narrow corridors of the ‘Via Dolorosa’ that Christ crumbled to the ground carrying the weight of the cross — bearing that wooden beam upon Himself. And the sheer weight of it put Christ to the pavement — the human Jesus fell with that tremendous burden — yes, affliction, our affliction. It belonged to us yet here was this innocent man struggling to carry it — struggling to fight FOR it not to give it away to another person because He knew as surely as we didn’t, that it was necessary. Necessary for HIM? Necessary for us. Is that not what relationships are all about? When someone else sees & perceives our worries & thoughts & stresses about life & we wish not to share it with anyone — it is always our closest friend & companion that seems to know — that perceives our burden & wishes to share in that afflcition with us. How is this any different to what the Christ did on the cross? He knew our singular weakness & disdain & problem — He knew, as humans, we would continue to remain oblivious but He chose to remedy & rectify the breach; He chose to secure a relationship that many of us would not care to want in the first place. But thanks be to God, through Jesus Christ our Lord!

The Leaves Of Healing

Dictionary.com, renders “serve” in this following definition :

“to act as a servant; the act, manner, or right of serving.”

There’s nothing that’s altogether incorrect or wrong about this definition — it spells out succinctly who & what this word means. Yet there is something that this definition lacks — the sense of purpose or calling. You see, in the definition, there is an implied understanding that only “servants” serve & the persons who are in the act of service are “servants.” Who are servants? This is not described in detail but it is implied that they refer to people & persons whose job is to serve — this does not describe any one of us unless we ourselves are in the employ of someone whom we are giving our service.

Let me turn your attention to this verse in Scripture —

Genesis 2:15

15 The LORD God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to WORK it & KEEP it.

In the beginning of the creation of the world, God had created man & put him in the Garden to work & keep the Garden. What does that mean? It means, simply, that man was created to serve the Garden; his function, his purpose, his calling, if you will, was to take care of the Garden & all that God had created. His job, therefore, is to make sure that all of creation under his supervision functioned properly. In that sense, he served God as a derivative of God Himself — man created in the image of God & yet not God. He was a physical & finite being but endowed with the Creator’s gifts & blessings of spiritual significance.

What this means for us is that from the dawn of human history, from our creation, we were meant to serve, to work, & to take care of the world & objects in & around us. There is no sense from this beginning that man was to serve himself, take care of himself or to work for himself. Matter of fact, it is in the giving of himself that all things & everything in the created universe thrives & prospers. There is a most natural question — in all of his giving of himself, what of man that he can thrive & prosper? This is answered by the implication that he is man & finite & therefore, is in need of something of divine & external to engineer this most stupendous feat of creative activity — God. And thus, this is how man thrived personally — in communion with God, in fellowship with the divine, he was both inspired & enabled to perform the feats of “gardening” that the Lord expected of him. Furthermore, such feats were expected of him as though naturally gifted.

Then the Fall of Gensis 3 enters the picture. More than its corruption & disruption of this perfect sublime image — it overturns & perverts the created order in which God had made so good. Sin has entered the created world & as such evil pervades everything. Yet still further what sin has done is that it has created a chasm of infinite proportions between humans & God to such an extent that in all we do in the performance of & in our material universe, is for the purpose of ourselves. In that sense, we serve ourselves. In the giving of ourselves, we become bankrupt to the point that we need & desire to take care of ourselves; to make sure that we, ourselves, are alright. Thus, we have distorted the image & picture of not just work but of service & serving.

What is meant for true service & of serving?

Revelation 22:2-3

2 through the middle of the street of the city; also, on either side of the river, the tree of life with its twelve kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit each month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. 3 No longer will there be anything accursed, but the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and his servants will worship him

Take careful note here : what is mentioned is that the leaves of the tree are meant for healing of the nations. Yet what is the tree — it is the tree of life that was first mentioned in Genesis 2. Furthermore, what of the fruit on this tree of life? The twelve kinds of fruit refer to the people of God. If this is the case, what is the representation of the tree of life? It is Christ, the Lamb, who is both the river of life & the tree of life, who is also sitting on the throne with God. Can you see this picture & image? Jesus Christ is all three — The Lamb who sits on the throne that gives life to everything that flows from Him; He is the river that flows from Him; and He is the tree of life that sustains the fruit of the tree. And we, who are in Christ, are sustained by the tree & the river that is Christ.

Where do I get my motivation for work? Where do I get my energy from work? Where do I get my endurance for work, when I want & desire to rest & take care of myself? If you are a Child of Christ, if Jesus is your Savior; If Christ is your image & your identity, then the answer is a very simple one — on your knees in repentance, give to Him your struggle of service. Because that is what’s happening to you. The defintion is not wrong — a servant is the one who serves. If we are a Child of Christ, we are called to serve — to give of ourselves tirelessly on a daily & hourly basis. There is no let up — we are serving & in service to the our Lord God & Jesus Christ. But also, we are serving & in service to others — our employer, our families, our friends, our neighbors, our wives or husbands, our children, our parents & even strangers — loving strangers & even hateful ones. Only Christ, who is our ever sustaining tree of life & river of life, can ever hope to fulfill in us & through us all that He demands of us & expects of us. Because if He fails to do this in this earthly life how can we possibly hope that He will sustain us into all eternity in Heaven with Him? Thus, In Christ Jesus, our service in Him begins now — on this side of eternity, not when we see Him face to face.

Why do we feel bankrupt in all of this giving of ourselves?

The answer is quite simple — we are giving of ourselves with the bankruptcy & futility of human nature. And if we are not In Christ, we do not have the Savior as the river of life flowing into us, nor are we attached to the tree of life that can sustain us. This is why Christ & Christ alone can fill our hearts so that we do not feel bankrupt in our service & at the same time can sustain all the giving we can do through His lovingkindness. I plead & ask all of us, including myself, that in all of our giving of ourselves in work & service to never forget & always remember that it is Christ, your all sustaining Grace & mercy in order to do to us what He always intended to do through us — the healing of the nations.

The Alpha & Omega

When we think about the people in our lives, whom we admire, honor, respect, & pay homage — they could be in the history books, a personality of our family heritage, or someone so dear to us & yet so far from us due to distance.

Sometimes we wish they could speak to us in the moment of crisis — we could beckon unto them & they would appear giving to us those soothing & touching words of wisdom; nuggets of comfort at the moment of contention. But, alas, they cannot, as they are either physically incapable or emotionally distant from our time of discontent. How often we so long for their presence, to converse in person, & to share our fellowship with them.

Underneath it all, is the knowledge of the bluntest of truth — the human is at all times, a most physical & present being. There is a beginning & an end to its life; limitations to both time & space. We, humans, cannot be everywhere at the same time inhabiting the physical space of many different people who long for the presence of the same person.

And so, there exists a dichotomy — that which pertains to humans & that which pertains to God :

Revelation 3:14

The words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of God's creation.

Revelation 22:13

13 I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.

Isaiah 43:10

10 “You are my witnesses,” declares the LORD,

“and my servant whom I have chosen,

that you may know and believe me

and understand that I am he.

Before me no god was formed,

nor shall there be any after me.

Isaiah 44:6

6 Thus says the LORD, the King of Israel

and his Redeemer, the LORD of hosts:

“I am the first and I am the last;

besides me there is no god.

On the surface, God is altogether different & contrary to the physical & material world humans inhabit. Before anything else in all creation, God was the first; after there will be anything in all creation, which is another way of saying that after everything & anything in all creation meets their end, God is the last. Which raises two very obvious questions : If God is the First, how did He appear & what made Him? And, if God is the Last, who or what will end God or how will God meet His end if everything in the material world ceases to exist?

To understand these questions is to understand that they are connected in some way to the nature of God. Alpha & Omega, the beginning & the end, in the English language, presents us with a set of problems that do not exist in the original text of these words. This is due to the fact that the average person would fail to recognize that Alpha & Omega are references to the two Greek letters of the Ancient Greek alphabet. The Greek letter Alpha is the first letter, whereas the Greek letter Omega is the last letter. In other words, to reference oneself as Alpha & Omega, the individual is proclaiming that he/she is the both the starting point & the ending point of all the letters in between. Every letter between Alpha & Omega is encompassed by the personality who is proclaiming this quality.

What is both unique & startling about this attribution is that in the Ancient Near Eastern religion, all the gods that were worshipped had a beginning & were essentially birth by some cosmic chaos surrounding it. God on the other hand, is ascribing to Himself an attribute that proclaim God as essential to everything & anything that came after Him. And at the same time, attributes to Himself that He will be the last of all things that will take place — in other words, Alpha & Omega is another way of proclaiming the infinite & eternal nature of God. He is neither Born nor does He experience Death; He is the sustainer of all life because all life derive their existence from Him; He cannot die because by definition, if He is the sustainer of life & all life derive their life from Him, then He is the very meaning & essence of life — life & death cannot cohabit God’s nature. Contrary distinctions do not inhabit His personality & quality.

Where is our sense of humanity? In this picture of an infinite & eternal God there exists only transcendence; He is very much unknowable — matter of fact, God in His being & nature & quality is the most absolute unknowable being in the universe. How can any human be able to cohabit His presence & entertain even the thought of sharing fellowship with Him? It is the most impossible undertaking.

And yet, there exists this wonderous thought — He is the very reason all life came into existence in the first place — Life from lifelessness; ex nihilo — literally, life from nothing. Thus, God when He created humans, He created the most marvelous piece of Divine craftsmanship that He could ever devise. And so desired their Fellowship from the beginning. Not because, human Fellowship was necessary for God; not because, human Fellowship gives to God value & worth & love. Rather, God inhabits in His character & nature all that is required & necessary already within the Fellowship of the Trinity — there is nothing more that He needs nor requires.

The Words of the Amen, the faithful & true Witness — references Jesus Christ. Everything that took place in creation including the Fall, where sin was introduced into this material universe & the cosmic effects of sin that reduced His creation into chaos & disorder, were all under the glare & exacting stare of God. Thus Jesus Christ, shares that infinite divine character & nature of God; He shares the Fellowship of the Trinity; He is fully in communion & unity & accord with God the Father. As a result, His entrance into our known world as a human being, God assigned unto Himself the role of Immanuel — the divine immanence — God with Us. He is now NOT unknowable but fully knowable — Jesus Christ makes this possible.

How? Because of His Spirit that dwells in the hearts of believers. His presence surrounds & engulfs His people; His presence lives inside & takes a home within the hearts of His people. Furthermore, the promises of God have their exclamation point in the presence & life of Jesus through the power & presence of the Holy Spirit. We are never left alone & left to our devises — no, we now share & commune & have fellowship with the divine.

Jesus Christ makes this possible. How? Because He was with God from the beginning — He is the eternal word in the flesh to dwell among us. This dichotomy between the eternal & finite; between the material & spiritual have collapsed unto the person of Christ our Messiah. Mortality is clothed in immortality through the finished work of Jesus upon the Cross. And upon that Cross, upon Jesus, we, humans, throw off our sinful nature. His Spirit dwells with us & allows us to conform into His image both in the mind & in the actions of our physical bodies. Our transformation into His likeness is necessary so that we would be made more & more infinite as He so desires. All through the Yes, our Amen, our True Witness — Jesus Christ our Savior & Lord — The Alpha & Omega, who belongs all glory & honor & power & praise & worship, forever & ever, Amen!

The Church Full Of His Fellowship

HENRY V (1599)

by WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE

ACT IV SCENE iii

KING HENRY —

“From this day to the ending of the world,

But we in it shall be rememberèd—

We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;

For he to-day that sheds his blood with me

Shall be my brother; be he ne'er so vile,

This day shall gentle his condition;

And gentlemen in England now a-bed

Shall think themselves accurs'd they were not here,

And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks

That fought with us upon Saint Crispin's day”

This is probably one of the more famous passages from William Shakespeare’s Play, Henry V. The words highlighted in bold, was introduced into our contemporary world through the HBO special — Band Of Brothers, a 10-part miniseries highlighting the courageous exploits of the 101st Airborne Division, the Screaming Eagles, 506th PIR, EASY COMPANY, led by Major Dick Winters. Both this quote & the miniseries showcased the closeness of men in combat; shoulder to shoulder as each trusted the man next to them by force & compulsion otherwise lives would have been lost. The exploits of these men through Normandy & into Germany & the final Victory, a bond was formed that was stronger than blood. A bond that was not necessarily instilled in these men to gravitate toward each other. Rather, the stress & distress, the constant barrage of gunfire & artillery, the immense suffering of wounded, dying & dead comrades thrust upon them that these strangers shared a common one-ness of cruelty of warfare — that unless they survived together they would be dead men.

As much as it is true of men, is there not a common shared purpose among a sisterhood? I am thrust into the history of the women’s suffrage movement where a common cruelty of preventing & dislodging the women’s right to vote was fought on the battlefield of consciousness — there existed a wrong that needed to be righted; an injustice not only perceived but also beheld as unbecoming a intelligent society calling itself the beacon of democracy. Until, finally that reality became true for those women & now true for all women.

REVELATION 3:7

The words of the holy one, the true one, who has the key of David, who opens and no one will shut, who shuts and no one opens.

A Brotherhood of Men & a Sisterhood of Women. This is the very meaning of ‘Philadelphia’ - a place of brotherly love. And yet, we have in our language that displays this very definition highlighting the exactitude of what this ‘place’ is supposed to represent — a fellowship. A Fellowship that comprises of its membership a certain quality of sameness in principle & idea; a coming together deriving that purpose from that shared quality; a quality that is more than just gender or even something simply intrinsic as a common understanding. It is the common shared principle & quality of having Jesus.

The key of David is a cryptic message — what is it & who has it? The answer is quite clear in the definite for those who fully understand to the listening ear of the Holy Spirit’s words. There is only one Holy One & only one True One — Jesus Christ, Messiah. He opens & shuts; He is the both the entry way & the way inside — and what is inside this door? The room is the Fellowship of the Triune — being in the Presence of the Trinity & immersing oneself with the Face of Him who raised Jesus from the dead. This enormity of the Power of God only for those who holds that Key of David in their heart — the Holy Spirit; the Spirit of Christ.

REVELATION 3:12

The one who conquers, I will make him a pillar in the temple of my God. Never shall he go out of it, and I will write on him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, the new Jerusalem, which comes down from my God out of heaven, and my own new name.

This passage contains three (3) identifying markers for these individuals — 1) they are pillars; 2) they will be forever present in this new city; 3) in this new city, these pillars will have a new name.

Why a pillar? Because if the pillar were to leave or become disjointed the entire structure would collapse. The importance of the pillar is revealed not in that there will be one but several pillars — the implication is that everyone in the Fellowship of Christ are called pillars & as such their personal responsibility adheres to the edifice & the structure that they are now beholden. Furthermore, they will never leave — they cannot leave for their very purpose is itself upheld by the Power & purpose of the Divine Trinity keeping both them, the pillars, & they, the structure & foundation of this Fellowship together in a perfect unity of oneness.

The New City is the New Jerusalem — Jeru/salem is actually two words in Hebrew : the cognates of these two words mean “the foundation or way of Peace or perfection.” In other words, Jerusalem is a city of perfect restitution & consummation; in this city we find our perfect unity not only within ourselves but also within each other. And only those with a New Name may enter — The Key of David. We, who hold Jesus in our hearts & minds that believe unto Him through the power of the Holy Spirit will ever enter this New City when He returns.

REVELATION 3:8

“I know your works.

Behold, I have set before you an OPEN DOOR,

which no one is able to shut.

I know that you have but little power,

and yet you have kept my word

and have not denied my name”

But there is another meaning & purpose of this ‘Open Door’ —

JOHN 14:23

23 Jesus answered him,

“If anyone loves me,

he will keep my word,

and my Father will love him,

and we will come to him

and make our home with him

Here, Christ explains that something really strange & altogether esoteric is occurring with individuals who ‘Loves Him’ & ‘Keeps His Word.’ There is a spiritual & physical bond taking place between God & Christ & individuals — making our home with him — makes it very clear that some aspect of the divine will now reside in this person; how they do it remains unclear in this passage but could be further explained here —

LUKE 24:28-31

28 So they drew near to the village

to which they were going.

CHRIST acted as if HE were going farther,

29 but they urged CHRIST strongly, saying,

“Stay with us, for it is toward evening

and the day is now far spent.”

So CHRIST went in to stay with them.

30 When CHRIST was at table with them,

HE took the bread & blessed

and broke it & gave it to them.

31 And their eyes were OPENED,

and they recognized HIM.

And CHRIST vanished from their sight

What in the world is going on here in this passge in Luke?

Christ is walking with two of His disciples but Luke makes it plain they do not reconzie Him as the risen Messiah, yet. They invite Christ into their home & He shares a meal with them — a meal that is reminiscent of the Last Supper. As Christ gives them the broken bread, the disciples suddenly realize that they are in the presence of Christ. Then He’s gone — as suddenly as He appeared.

The meaning is both plain & at the same time cryptic — Jesus is the reason that these disciples’ eyes were opened in the first place; they would not have had this opportunity unless they invited Him into their home, or better, their hearts. Home & heart are related in Scripture because “the home is where the heart is.” Is it not true for us, that our homes are consistent with our very being? In other words, how we make our homes is very revealing about ourselves & who we are as individuals. Thus, throughtout the New Testament Gospels, Jesus is constantly in the presence of people directly IN their homes as a physical analogy & metaphor to the very real purpose of Christ Jesus entering our hearts. No matter how clean we try to make it, Christ comes in regardless of its appearance for it is the heart He seeks not its condition.

Moreover, the heart is revealing conerning the welfare of the entire person. Christ breaks the bread to show that our new condition is found in the breaking of our bodies. Full restoration is in store for those us who eat of His Bread. When this takes place our hearts are given over to His fullness & His Glory & into His Fellowship forever. Why did He vanish? Because Christ no longer needed to be physically present — in His place, with full restoration of their hearts to Him, the Holy Spirit entered; or better still, the physical manifestation of Christ Jesus vanished & in His place entered these men’s hearts as the Holy Spirit. The Spirit of Jesus dwells in all who believe evidenced by this passage.

And that is why there is no more full & perfect harmony of purpose & oneness than marriage — the coming together of body & soul of two people into a unity. Thus, marriage is the epitome of this physical metaphor to elaborate what Christ is doing for Christians. We are not bonded together because we are Christians — that is true but there is more. We are bonded together because Christ unites all of us into Himself in Marriage — INTO Himself.

In other words, our brotherhood & sisterhood & fellowship in Christ, occurs because we all have been United IN Him; into His perfect Body. This is why He is both the Head & the Body of Christ — both the structure that we uphold as pillars & THE Perfect Pillar that He upholds all of us unto Himself. He is both the New City, the New Name, & the Foundation by which this Name & City come together. Thus, that is why we repeat — it is By Him & Through Him & In Him, that we, as Believers, have our being & essence & quality In Christ throughthe Transformation by His Spirit.

The Glory Of His Whiteness

Revelation 3:5

5 The one who conquers will be clothed thus in white garments, and I will never blot his name out of the book of life. I will confess his name before my Father and before his angels

More than Purity is in view when Christ speaks through the Pen of Apostle of John. Authenticity & Genuineness of Heart, is what Christ is speaking. It is thus, assured in this manner of “white garments” that such a conquerer could never be & will never be blotted nor removed from the Presence of the Assembly of Heaven. It is interesting to note that Christ is speaking about not only before the Presence of His Father but also of the Angels as well. Why is this important? Rather than a community of the Fellowship of the Triune God-head, Christ includes the assembly of the Angels as well. This begs the following the question — Are the Angels involved in some way in the Community & Fellowship of the God-head? Are the Angels knowledgeable as much as the Triune God-head? The answer to both questions is an emphatic NO. The Angels are not in the Fellowship of the God-head exercising powers as if they are divine & eternal in the SAME way as the Trinity. Nor are the Angels knowledgeable in the SAME way as the God-head — they may be spiritual beings, but they have limitations in their essential nature & quality in comparison to the God-head.

Thus, the reason for the assembly of the Angels is not that we, as conquerers, stand in judgment before the eyes of this holy assembly rather, that we, as conquerers stand side by side & with the Triune God-head as the Angels look upon us with reverence. As heirs to God the Father & Co-Heirs with Christ as adopted Sons & Daughters, we take our seat, our rightful place before the Throne of Glory —

Revelation 4:2-4

2 At once I was in the Spirit, and behold, a throne stood in heaven, with one seated on the throne. 3 And he who sat there had the appearance of jasper and carnelian, and around the throne was a rainbow that had the appearance of an emerald. 4 Around the throne were twenty-four thrones, and seated on the thrones were twenty-four elders, clothed in white garments, with golden crowns on their heads.

The meaning of the twenty four thrones seated by twenty four elders, clothed in white garments, around the singular throne haloed by a rainbow, whose appearnce is that of an emerald, is none other than the conquerers that Christ mentioned in Revelation 3:5. We, who are in Christ, have a rightful place on the throne with Christ. We will not rule in His Place rather the promise is that we will rule with Him as well as exalt & worship & glorify Him, ALL of THIS at the same time!

This is a promise in Scripture as yet unfulfilled. Why? Because, Christ is speaking to the Church in the time of His NOT YET appearing. In other words, Christ is speaking to Apostle John almost in the same way He is speaking to us now, by the Power & Agency of the Holy Spirit. When He comes again, ALL THINGS will be consummated into His Glory & Excellence. That Consummation has not happened yet because His Second Coming has not happened yet. But it will!

Thus the Call of Christ to be clothed in white. But this is not a call to purity — as if we can do anything of value in terms of morality & ethics in behavior & right thinking. It is a call to genuineness & authenticity of Faith In Christ. THIS is how we clothe ourselves in white. Faith In Christ, means that we value Christ more than our moral & ethical behavior & what WE THINK is right. Faith In Christ, means that we value Christ more than what He can give us or even bless us with. Faith In Christ, means we value Christ more than even righteousness itself — for we know that In Christ, a righteousness apart from Christ is not true, authentic, & genuine righteousness. It is idolatry. A self-idol made by human thoughts & engineered by human behavior.

Rather, what we want is Faith IN Christ where Christ is our object & the goal & the prize. Do you long to know Christ? And I mean KNOW Christ! Do not say to yourself & to your mind & lie & deceive yourself into believing that you already KNOW Him. Because as the Fore-Fathers of the Faith, from St Augustine to Martin Luther to John Owen to Jonathan Edwards, have all wrote & have cried out loud from the strokes of their Pens & the tops of their lungs — CHRIST, let it be nothing but Christ & ALL of Christ & NOTHING more, for there is nothing more than Christ that we long for, desire, & want for all eternity!

Eternal Life begins when we accept & believe Christ — the God-Man suffered & died for my sin; redeeming me to God the Father. And now through His Spirit, through His Power & New Blood, we long to know this Christ throughout all eternity.

Thus to be clothed in white garments means, my friends, is to be clothed IN CHRIST!

The Perfume Of Christ

Exodus 30:7-9

7 And Aaron shall burn fragrant incense on it. Every morning when he dresses the lamps he shall burn it, 8 and when Aaron sets up the lamps at twilight, he shall burn it, a regular incense offering before the LORD throughout your generations. 9 You shall not offer unauthorized incense on it, or a burnt offering, or a grain offering, and you shall not pour a drink offering on it.

Only Aaron, the High Priest & the high priests from his hereditary line may perform the function of burning incense upon the altar. The purpose is very specific — only incensed may be burned; not any other type of burnt offering. The Altar of Burnt Offering & the Altar of Incense were intentional furnishings where burning were supposed to take place & were performance art. The divergence was that the Altar of Burnt Offering were made of ovwerlaid with bronze & was visible in the sight of entire community of Israel. The Altar of Incense was overlaid with gold & hidden from sight of the entire community of Israel — only Yahweh God witnessed & oversaw this performance.

Because it was a performance before Yahweh God, the manner & location of performance was significant as it required the specificity of the offering on the site of the Altar. In other words, the gross display of killing & burning the animals upon the Altar was strictly forbidden inside the Tent of Meeting, which was the rectangular structure within the Tabernacle Complex located to the far west of the entrance. It was further subdivided into two sections called the Holy Place & the Most Holy Place. Inside the Holy Place, three specific items were to be constructed : The Lampstand, The Table of Show Bread & the Altar of Incense. A purple veil covered & divided the enclosure to the Most Holy Place, which housed the Ark of the Covenant.

Therefore, because we can conclusively assume that the Tent of Meeting represented the Presence of Yahweh God as His dwelling place it was to remain free of any foul & foreign ordors. Thus whatever taint & blemish that was occuring outside in the Courtyard of the Tabernacle would not be introduced nor be made visible due to the coverings that surrounded the Tent of Meeting. However, the Incense did provide the most elementary of its most basic function — to rid the Tent of Meeting of any adverse & foul stench emanating from the Courtyard that could infiltrate & overwhelm the Tent.

In a sense, the Tent of Meeting in both literal & figurative sense stood as the only Holy object in the sight of all Israel. As the burnt offerings were being performed outside the Tent in the Courtyard of the Tabernacle, the community would see the Tent as being Wholly “Other’ — untouchable from whatever was occuring to the east of the Tent; the drama would inspire both terror & awe that the Presence of God would be so close & yet so far away — separated & segregated from the commiunity at the same time.

The main problem of representation, analogy, & symbolism is that at the most fundamental level, they leave no trace of ‘actual’ existence — you cannot touch, taste, see, hear, or smell metaphors. Thus the three objects inside the Tent of Meeting — the Lampstand, the Table of Show Bread & the Altar of Incense — were to be visible reminders of the real Presence of God. To constantly & daily remind the people that God resided with them in their midst even as His residence was set apart.

How do you represent an Individual’s presence? Their fragrance, their perfume, & their smell — what they leave behind & what they did as they took up residence. The Incense was the visceral reminder through the smell of the Person & character of God — Holy. And yet, only a select few were able to witness this — the entire community were forbidden to enter the Tent of Meeting — why?

For what purpose did God enact this prohibition? To display for the entire community of Israel that the Presence of God can only be had if & only if they themselves were holy & set apart. The problem was that unless you were Aaron himself or one of his sons & born into Aaron’s family, you were immediately excluded. This creates a rather terrifying conundrum — if by being in His presence represented that His Favor rested upon you, how would you know as a member of this community that His Favor rested with you if you were not allowed entrance into His Presence to begin with?

And this is where by sheer observation, an individual must come to the conclusion that Yahweh God would engineer a better & newer way. He would cultivate from this symbolic representation of His very Real Presence into the Person of the Messiah. And He will become the very Real manifestation of what the Tabernacle was foretelling. Therefore, in the Person of the Messiah, the community would believe in Him to receive in them the new birth necessary to gain entry into His Presence. The entire Tabernacle structure from its many furnishings to its partitions demonstrates the problem of the natural state of human life & of living — that it is predicated upon birth & genealogy.

But a new birth in Christ as our Messiah will do away with the natural order of human life & engineer a type of people created in His image & His likeness so that they are no longer barred from His Presence. They will have gained an entry that not even Moses & Aaron could have gained — into the very Face of His Presence. A community must change their entire disposition & of being — from a human nature that despises & displeases God to a divine nature that loves, worships, & is accepted by God; from mortal flesh to immortality; from dead souls to resurrected souls; from body to Spirit.

The Church of Thyatira is that community embodied in the Spirit of Christ as that embodiment of the resurrection they are made new into His Image — not any other image or any other likeness; not any other fashion nor any other work — they are products of His work & His engineering. Thus, they have betrayed their own refashioned likeness from the Image of Christ into something other — in effect, relinquishing the work God had made through the finished work of Christ. What is this, but an attempt to make themselves unlike that very image; to remove the fellowship & union with Christ — this is why Christ calls them followers of Jezebel.

Her name is not only synonomous with idolatry & sexual immorality but also her very name means — ‘Un-husband-ed’. In other words, The Church of Thyatira is not promiscuous because of their singleness or wanting to remain single & disdain marriage. Rather ‘un-husband-ed’ means they are already married & choose to flee from intimacy with their true partner — their husband. To remain in Christ is both a call to action & an innate Spiritual byproduct — it is a choice to manifest from the human flesh that action that is required for eternal life; it is also a response from that innate natural instinct born of the Spirit of Christ to obedience.

Though the command comes to us into our human flesh to obey, the Spiritual Nature imbues into that flesh the innate response that that command requires. It is not an impossible task to obey Christ & follow His commands because of the endowment given to us in the Person of the Holy Spirit to both enable & transform mortal flesh into conformity.

The Commencement Of Information Unto Salvation

Dr Werner Gitt, in his book, In The Beginning Was Information, outlined five Levels of Information :

1. Statistics

Lowest level of information but is not detailed enough to communicate anything of value.

Ex. tt tt tt tt tt tt; t13t t13t t13t t13t t13t

2. Syntax

Next level of information where the sequence of information is more intelligible but do not communicate anything of value.

Ex. grand the, eats letting

3. Semantics

Higher level of information whereby the communication generated is understood and of value. It communicates basic fact and is notable for the fact that a response is not needed.

Ex. grandpa is eating

4. Pragmatics

Higher level of information that requests action; communication of basic fact that requires a response from the receiver that may or may not be given.

Ex. grandpa let's eat

5. Apobetics

Highest level of information whereby the communication given is expected a response; a response is necessary in order for what was communicated to proceed or commence.

Did you notice one obvious flaw of information unto you read about Apobetics? The critical flaw of information is that unless it can commence an object or species to respond in the way in which that particular information was given, information itself is both futile & powerless. As a consequence, it does not matter whether or not you have such information or if it cannot promote, commence, or proceed with its necessary instruction in order to stimulate the necessary response. Thus, response is crucial to the understanding of the value & validity of information.

The Christ speaks to the Apostle John about the concern of the distortions & the blurring of the message of Jesus Christ — His Gospel Message :

Revelation 2:14

14 But I have a few things against you: you have some there who hold the teaching of Balaam, who taught Balak to put a stumbling block before the sons of Israel

In the Book of Numbers chapters 22-24, we have the full accounting of this particular story that Jesus is mentioning. Balak is the King of Moab & he has become alarmed at the growing might of the Israelites in the Transjordan, for they have defeated the Amorite armies of King Sihon & the armies of King Og of Bashan. Balak sends messengers to a non-Israelite prophet from Beor by the name of Balaam. He sends back word to Balak that he must only speak the words that Yahweh, God, Himself have put into his mouth. Three (3) times, Balak sacrifices on altars dedicated to Baal & pleads with Balaam to curse the Israelites. Yet three (3) times Balaam refuses to curse the Israelites speaking only the words of Yahweh God that blesses Israel.

We have in this story a distortion of information — Balak seeks one form of communication to curse the Israelites in the hopes that such information would produce profound fatal consequences for the people of Israel. Yet through the agency of Yahweh God another entirely opposite form of communcation is produced — not from the desiring heart of Balaam himself nor engineered from the lips of Balaam rather profoundly communicating the words of God of such powerful significance unto the people of Israel. A man, attempted to engineer a response from information yet was foiled by the power of God.

There exists distortion in the way in which humanity communicates information. A distortion that can have tragic & critical consequences if responded in a certain way. It is merely not enough to retain information but also the value of understanding such information & how to respond appropriately. The church of Pergamum were being stumbled by a similar word from a someone who was claiming to promote information that stood apart from the Gospel of Christ. Indeed, a promotion of a word that pronounced the needlessness of Christ — that salvation did not require Christ; that spirituality can be obtained through contemplation of such speculative reasoning.

What does Christ say in response? Repent — the church has turned its back from the salvation of Jesus Christ; they have accepted the distortion of the truth of Scripture; they have invalidated the word of Christ by validating the word of a human. Information itself is meaningless; even the words — Jesus Saves — can do little. But the power in the words comes not through the letters in a particular order so that language is communicated & understood. Rather, there is a Spirit that enables humans to understand — Jesus Saves — not as a collection of letters but salvation in a divine person. The words have both meaning & power because we derive our salvation from such words. And at the same time, the same Spirit that enables saving Grace upon us is the same Spirit that enables us to reflect His image.

Information at its most powerful extent is when the individual receiving information seeks to respond in an appropriate manner. In such a way, we receive the information of Jesus Christ as Lord, The Christ who did die & did resurrect on the Third Day. Then we respond in an appropriate manner — genuflecting ourselves in repentance & faith through the Agency & Power of His Spirit that now indwells all believers in Christ. This is the message of the power of the Cross — that it enables incapable people such as ourselves to respond in a way that incapable people, who are neither spirit nor spiritual, inherently, do not possess.

ALL THE WAY my Savior Leads me; who have I to ask beside? Through Repentance of our daily washing & cleansing in the mercies of His Blood & through the maturing of Faith, that He, Himself assures by the Spirit.

The Church Full Of His Suffering

If in all our toil & hard work there only produces more toil & hard work or suffering & pain, then our efforts can only be viewed as meaningless & futile. Such meaninglessness & futility can only produce despair & hopelessness to the point where life & all its meaning will be defined as the end in itself. In other words, one can only expect in this human life with all the toil producing more toil & pain as the very point of life. If we reach such a conclusion, what is the point in living?

If, however, there is more to human life than toil & hard work producing more toil & hard work even pain & suffering, then life & all its meaning will be magnified that much greater because the pursuit was overcome & finally reaches its climax — there exists a certain satisfaction that the finality of all the hardship & suffering reaches a nexus point where the very definition of human life is found.

What if, this is true? In all our hardship, work, toil, pain & suffering in human life that there is a defining characteristic. But a characteristic of human life not defined by the work & pain itself, rather in what they represent apart from & in opposition to our true form of being. In this present body of human existence there is a finality of of the end that is death. A finality that is as inescapable as it is inevitable. Nothing we can do about changing that end; the result of all our work whether we lived it in comfort or pain all our lives. Therefore, if we are right — that this current life only represents an opposing form of life from our true form of life, then what is that life?

Hear & listen to the words of Christ through the Revelation of John —

Revelation 2:8-11

8 “And to the angel of the church in Smyrna write: ‘The words of the first and the last, who died and came to life.

9 “‘I know your tribulation and your poverty (but you are rich) and the slander of those who say that they are Jews and are not, but are a synagogue of Satan.

10 Do not fear what you are about to suffer. Behold, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and for ten days you will have tribulation. Be faithful unto death, and I will give you the crown of life.

11 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. The one who conquers will not be hurt by the second death.’

I highlighted three key phrases in this passage — two of the three passages concerns ‘life,’ whereas the third & final highlighted passage speaks about ‘death.’ Are these significant? If you only read the highlighted portion of this text, what is the idea that is being presented? First, that this unnamed being is altogether coterminous or connected with eternity — eternally everlasting (first, means not the first object created in existence but the only object in existence. Last, means not the last object to ever be in existence but the consummation of all things; all things reaching their climax) & eternally present.

Second, this unnamed being who is both eteranlly everlasting & eternally present, died in physical form & was raised to life again in physical form. Third, this unnamed being because he, himself was raised to life from the dead, he now retains the power over death in order to give it to others — empowering them to also conquer death. Finally, that he, himself will enable the power to conquer death & that the very clutches of death will have no power over them.

Who is this unnamed being? Jesus Christ. He is speaking about Himself, concerning the victory over life & death & thus assuming all the power that that entails — being thus the power itself to raise from the dead, He now can propitiate or give & ennoble & bestow upon the others this very same power. And who are these that are ennobled, bestowed upon, & are powerful? The Church. Are they everyone IN the church? Only to those — The one who conquers. And how do we know as the church that we are “the one who conquers” — Be faithful unto death. — if we are faithful. Faithfulness is an attribute of a the one who conquers but that individual can only be faithful if the faith is believing the Lord Jesus Christ as God & Man, Incarnate Son of God, died on the cross for sins, & finally redeemed us through His resurrection. Believing & having faith in this Gospel of the Christ, consumes the individual by faith by the power of the Holy Spirit.

It is not an effort thing, as in, a human effort thing. Nor is it a working thing, as in, working regardless of the fruitfulness or fruitlessness of life. Rather, it is a Spiritual thing — what, in fact do we as human beings actually do? We acknowledge everyday on our knees, how much we are in need of Christ — that we are poor & bankrupt without Christ; all of our striving is meaningless without Christ; that such hard work & toil & suffering cannot find its ultimate meaning, final consummation, & climax in us through Faith, without Christ. Christ must be in us through all the joys & sufferings of human life; that we must very much continue in this present life & into eternity, seek to know Him more, love Him more, & enjoy Him more!

What this means is both powerful & rich! It exposes suffering for it is — the powerlessness of life & of human life in particular. Rather than to assume & fixate upon this present existence as the meaning of life itself & attempt to prolong human existence in this present state. Christ pleads that we relinquish that quest for meaning & find an even more satisfying meaning. In Christ Jesus, we will find the ultimate satisfaction of all life both present & eternal is In Him. All other life will find itself in the grave & in destruction. That He is both our Joy in Life & our finality In Life — He IS our Life!

For The Beauty Of The Christ

For the uninitiated, the game of Baseball is a rather boring sport. It seems time just moves very methodically & slowly as if it was created by lazy people who wanted to play a lazy sport with no action. And yet that seeming perception that it is a lazy man’s sport empty of visceral action misses the true value of the sport that first, & foremost, it is a team game. It is true a singular player on a Baseball team can manufacture runs all by himself. Yet, he will be unable to win any games by himself. Perhaps, you’re reading this, & you think to yourself, how is that any different to other sports — Football, Hockey, Soccer, & Basketball? Well, unlike those other sports, Baseball, is the only sport in which the defense takes possession of the ball to initiate the game. And it is the only sport in which the offense is generated by the matchup of only two players — the pitcher & the batter.

The point is not to change your opinion that Baseball is not a boring sport. Rather, to at least convince you that it is as compelling in the high drama of sport as the other sports I have mentioned. In my opinion, with the game on the line, that decides between winning & losing the game, the singular matchup between the pitcher & the batter creates such dramatic tension unsurpassed in most of the sporting world. But, you see, it takes all Nine players of a Baseball team to win the game.

If the Ephesian Church is a Baseball Team, they have ‘abandoned’ their primary source of power in their lineup —

Revelation 2:4-5

4 But I have this against you, that you have abandoned the love you had at first. 5 Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent, and do the works you did at first. If not, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place, unless you repent.

He commands them to return to the love that they had at first & to do the works that they did at first — to repent & return to Christ. In essence, The Christ is calling them to action but not in a way that we would expect — pray more, read the Scripture more, & devote themselves to spiritual singing. Rather than a call to action, it is a call to remembrance — to remember & embrace their original salvation, which is empty in all that they are currently doing. Because to do the work of Christ absent Christ Himself, is both meaningless & powerless. At that point, the work is being done for our glory & for our benefit; not for His glory & His Presence.

We are never to neglect & throw off (abandon) the Christ in all the works of Faith but to indulge ourselves in the Christ in order to refine our Faith in genuine & authentic lives that glorify the Savior.

The Beauty of this passage is that the basic refrain is repeated seven (7) times, to all seven churches : Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia, & Laodicea — He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who conquers [blank], I will grant [blank].

Revelation 2:7,

7 He who has an EAR, let him HEAR what the SPIRIT says to the CHURCHES. To the one who CONQUERS I will grant to EAT of the Tree Of Life, which is in the PARADISE OF GOD.

In order to hear the Spirit, one must be endowed by the fundamental listening device, a spiritual ear. And how does one come to possession of such a spiritual quality? Faith in Christ Jesus through His blood. To listen to what the Spirit says, who is the Holy Spirit, we would understand that this is the 3rd Person of the Trinity & the Spirit of Christ indwelt of Believers. That power is always present in the life-blood of Believers & as such, that power comes because of Faith & not anything else. ‘To the one who conquers,’ is not in contradiction to the Faith that Believers are endowed. If anything, it is to assure Believers that their Faith is not a wasted faith nor a powerless one. It is a Faith that can only conquer. It can only but assume its rightful place in the Paradise of God.

As Baseball has an element of the game called the ‘sacrifice,’ where a player performs a selfless act for the good of the team by making an ‘out’ so that the team would be placed in a more advantageous position. Christ Jesus, becomes our sacrifice in order that He would dwell in the hearts of His people, thereby strengthening us & enabling us into His conformity. It is that conformity that allows us to work & do all things for His glory & righteousness.

We come to bat everyday of our lives facing off against the stress & rigor of life — sometimes it is like a fastball we can see coming but we are too slow to react; other times it curves or slides away from us at the last second in such a way that we lose control of our bearings & flail aimlessly at the wind.

The empowerment of Christ; the enabling Spirit of Christ; the endowment we possess by the Spirit of Christ, will never allow us to portray ourselves as abject failures. In this Nine-Inning Game of Life, we know that the outcome will be for our Salvation & Eternity with Christ even as we do not know nor fully understand what the intervening Innings will bring until we reach the final culmination & climax of this Game.

Freely Offered, Few Receive

Imagine for a moment — what is your most desirable profession? What about its qualities & its specific purposes that fit snugly with your own? What about the many permutations of decison-making that will be required in any profession — what about this profession you are thinking, that makes it so sweet & music to your heart? Have you found one yet? Or are you still searching? It is not such an easy question to answer for many of us — and even for a lot of us who are in our so-called dream profession, there is always something that nags at us, tugs at the very cynical core of our being that make us loathe it on some days.

But imagine if you could have this dream profession & be productive always despite all the loathesome days & the nights that you may disdain working there. Imagine, such a productivity that does not depend on your ingenuity or creativity or your blood, sweat, & tears. Imagine, a profession whereby your productivity that does not depend on you & yet, at the same time, are used specifically that always good will result.

Hear, then, the words of Christ Jesus, Himself —

Matthew 13:23

23 As for what was sown on good soil, this is the one who hears the word and understands it. He indeed bears fruit and yields, in one case a hundredfold, in another sixty, and in another thirty

The word, good, have been thrown about so frequently that we have essentially lost the meaning of the word. Good, in the Biblical sense, is an innate state. Its origin in the Bible is found in Genesis, when the Lord God created the Earth & all that was in it & exclaimed that “it is good.” What that means is “productive & useful; purposeful & fruitful.” When we consider what the Christ is saying in Matthew 12:23 is a sharp rebuke of what many in the crowd & even His disciples thought about the current human state of productivity. Many would have assumed that the religiosity of the Jewish Leaders, at least, would be included in the type of productivity that Christ is describing.

And yet He is not. This would come as a shock to His listeners — the seed is the Word of the Kingdom of Heaven. NOT the word that the multitude have heard from the Jewish Leaders; NOT from their Teachers in the synagogue; NOT any other religious fanatic that may have walked the same cobblestone pavement. Not even John the Baptist that came immediately before Christ, who spoke that whose sandals he was unworthy to untie. Rather, the seed that is the word of the Kingdom is the Person of Jesus Christ standing before them delivering these powerful words.

The word is that there is salvation through the word of Jesus. Believe on His word & you will be saved, for there is no other word that can save you. However, not only this, in order to receive this word, your heart must be prepared — the good soil. But in order to obtain this good soil it must come by the Father who has prepared it for you. This may cause many us to become forlorn & dejected — for such a good soil does not come through human intellect, reason, logic or the mind but through the power of the Holy Spirit who was sent of the Father. Then & only then is Faith & Belief even possible. But oh how powerful! For that little thing; that small, almost insignificant, occurrence in human eyes is the most cataclysmic occurrence. Now, in Christ Jesus we have Saving Faith — a life-altering, nature-changing transformation from death to life; from frailty & fruitlessness to life-giving, life-sustaining fruitfulness.

Acts 9:16

16 For I will show [Paul] how much [Paul] must suffer for the sake of My name

2 Corinthians 11:23-28

23 Are they servants of Christ? I am a better one—I am talking like a madman—with far greater labors, far more imprisonments, with countless beatings, and often near death. 24 Five times I received at the hands of the Jews the forty lashes less one. 25 Three times I was beaten with rods. Once I was stoned. Three times I was shipwrecked; a night and a day I was adrift at sea; 26 on frequent journeys, in danger from rivers, danger from robbers, danger from my own people, danger from Gentiles, danger in the city, danger in the wilderness, danger at sea, danger from false brothers; 27 in toil and hardship, through many a sleepless night, in hunger and thirst, often without food, in cold and exposure. 28 And, apart from other things, there is the daily pressure on me of my anxiety for all the churches

However, The Apostle, does not describe a life of fruitfulness. Rather he is describing a life of pain & sorrow & abject misery. How do these twin concepts coalesce — how does suffering have anything whatever to do with fruitfulness as the Christ described?

1 Corinthians 9:19

19 For though I am free from all, I have made myself a servant to all, that I might win more of them

1 Corinthians 9:22-23

22 To the weak I became weak, that I might win the weak. I have become all things to all people, that by all means I might save some. 23 I do it all for the sake of the gospel, that I may share with them in its blessings

Do you hear his imploring? Do you not hear his contempt for the living — his own life? There is now another life to be waged in the battlefield of human hearts & it is in that battlefield to win for Christ. Yet, it is not him who will save souls for Jesus — no, rather, his argument is that he will sacrifice to become a servant of all in order that by doing so, he will bring them to Christ & that the Christ will save them — “I will do it all for the sake of the Gospel.” For the sake of the Gospel. Not Paul’s own words or his own life or his own ingenuity & cunning but through the power & presence of the Gospel, which is the Lord Jesus. It is the Christ he is presenting & bringing before Him & it will be Christ who will save.

Thus, there will be suffering because many will not accept what we offer & even disdain the gift we are offering. That cannot & should not prevent us from offering in the first place. As Christ Himself spoke, there are many paths or hearts that will hear the word but only upon the good soil will the hearing turn to understanding so that they will be saved. May we all hear & listen but at the same time that we may all Understand with the renewed mind of the Holy Spirit so that we may be good in all we do!

An Exhibition On Display

Dictionary.com defines “exhibition” as the following — a public display, as of the work of artists or artisans, the products of farms or factories, the skills of performers, or objects of general interest.

Most often, when we imagine the word ‘exhibition’ we are thinking about art & its artisans; craftmanship of the craft for all to see. In its most positive light we behold the beauty of the artform on display & appreciate the craftsmanship of the artisan. Indeed, we critique the artisan upon their handiwork observing all the intricate details & fine lines, making absolutely certain that we, as the observers, did not miss anything. A true exhibition, would you not agree, is meant to be observed & admired, even critiqued, for the object on display is put on display for the people to watch & see & marvel at the beauty of the created artform. Or to criticize & curse & humiliate both the artisan & the artform.

Let us take a moment to imagine the Cross. It is nothing more than two pieces of wood — one horizontal cross-beam bisecting a longer vertical beam. Is it not true, then, that that is not all there is to this image? To many of us, it is not enough simply to imagine the cross as two pieces of wood but rather, the identity of the individual on that cross — nailed to the cross. We find its metaphors sometimes emblazoned with our names or initials engraved & embossed in gold leaf or silver or platinum worn about the neck adorning the person whom we care about deeply. This is now a symbol — this jewel about the neck — of the enduring love & faith that this person wears as a sign of deep affection.

Yet, the cross was the most cruel form of punishment ever devised & engineered by human hands. Its most basic & only function, to mete out punishment to the maximum extent of physical torment until life is extinguished by breathlessness. The criminal hangs in full view of all winesses so that the individual is put to shame & embarrassment of the act they had committed.

Christ, on the other hand, went to the cross not as a criminal charged with a crime but an innocent man taking on the charge of the guilty. Why would an innocent man as Christ, the Holy Son of God, the Divine God-Man, choose to do this? Because “for all humankind have sinned & fall short of the glory of God” —

Romans 3:24-26

24 and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25 whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God's righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins. 26 It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.

You see, it was love on display. Love on exhibition. It was the grace & mercy of God the Father as a gift for us so that we would look upon the Christ & be put to shame that an innocent man died for the sins that you & I committed — be put to shame so that we would reach for that mercy hanging there on the cross & ask for mercy upon us. And by grace we are saved through Faith. No words can describe; no words can do true justice to this picture; no words can spring into action the artform of God the Artisan showing to us His Amazing Grace. This object of God’s wrath, the man Jesus Christ on the cross, is our redemption & the mercy of the same God — the same God who put His only Son to death is the same God who will bring about our salvation & renewal through His Son.

This perfect image of the cross of our Lord Jesus becomes magnified into glorious exhibition when we view it in concert with the sacrament of the Lord’s Supper. Taken in conjunction with each other the picture becomes clear — The body of Christ broken for us; the Blood of Christ spilled for us — this is the justice & wrath of God upon Christ for us :

1 Corinthians 11:23-26

23 For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, 24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, “This is my body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” 25 In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” 26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes.

Then, gloriously, when we partake & eat of the body that was broken for us — the bread; when we partake & drink of the blood that was spilled for us — the wine; this displays the salvation & grace of God within our own bodies. We have the picture & the image of Christ within the elements as a sign of His enduring love & fellowship with us.

My friends, both the cross of & the Lord’s Supper are exhibitions of God’s enduring love & mercy. They are affectionate craftsmanship of the true Artisan, God, who displayed His Son publically so that we would be forgiven through the very objects that put the Christ to death. His death is our pardon; His death means our lasting & enduring friendship & fellowship with the Trinity forever.

What's The Matter With You?

The Law of Conservation of Mass dates from Antoine Lavoisier's 1789 discovery that mass is neither created nor destroyed in chemical reactions. In other words, the mass of any one element at the beginning of a reaction will equal the mass of that element at the end of the reaction.

We are introduced to this Law very early in our foundation of Scientific Education & we hold these as self-evident truths — meaning that they are true always regardless of how we may individually feel about them. Scientific truths are truths regardless of individual experience because by the very definition of scientific truth, they are always examined closely making sure that these Laws of nature always & do exist through speculation & research. Therefore, time & again through the experience of observation we can always prove these Laws to be correct — they form the back-bone of the fundamentals of Nature.

Take a moment to rediscover this valuable truth — “Matter is neither created nor destroyed in chemical reactions.” It is so simple yet a valuable tool; the substances that are arranged in a reaction will always manifest themselves in such a way that no new products materialize nor the initial products lost. The initial products can be disassembled & arrayed differently in a reaction but no new substances that were not initially added, cannot be created nor formed. There are limits.

Even science, as it were, cannot impose its will upon chemical reactions — what you put in, is what will come out. The limitation is both valid & real in our material universe; in this physical reality that we currently reside. You, also inhabit that physical & material reality. You are as much matter as the reactants that are put into a chemical reaction — matter of fact, Biologists would love to illustrate the fact that the human body is composed of such complex series of chemical reactions that uphold Lavoisier’s Law of Conservation of Mass.

Thus, let us be thoroughly awed & stupefied when we read the following words —

John 2:7-10

7 Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water.” And they filled them up to the brim. 8 And he said to them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the feast.” So they took it. 9 When the master of the feast tasted the water now become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), the master of the feast called the bridegroom 10 and said to him, “Everyone serves the good wine first, and when people have drunk freely, then the poor wine. But you have kept the good wine until now.”

Is there any scientific explanation for this? Is there anything in water that can produce wine? The Law clearly states that no new products can be created nor products destroyed from whatever that was not initially put together in a reaction. This, then is a subversion or a law-breaking reaction — a subversion of scientific fact. Yet, what Christ is doing here is not to break any laws — that’s right, NOT to break any laws — but to reveal another law at work; not to fundamentally overthrow the laws at work in Nature but to reveal the Law of Nature embodied in the Person of Jesus — The One who upholds all the laws in order to fashion order from the chaos & confusion; to allow us to find the meaning of all the symbols & metaphors of nature around us.

Eventually, following the Laws of Nature will not get us anywhere because of the inherent limitation — survival. Though fundamentally nothing changes in terms of molecules & compounds, decay & the breaking down of the reactions assumes that there will be different physical aspects of human life — life will soon cease until we return to the ground.

What is revealed in the Wine — a renewing of Life. Life from lifelessness or better still, LIFE from life. Not just a redirected life or even a repurposed life. Rather, a transformed & renewed Life — a Newness of Life. Water & Wine are not the same thing, we can all agree on that — a miracle of fantastic proportions took place at Cana. And not just any wine but the most fabulous & stupendous Wine anyone had drunk previously!

It highlights the transformation that through the process of this Newness of Life, something else that results will be perceived to be even better than the one that came before. In such a Newness of Life that results that all memory of the oject before will be forgotten because the product now transformed is so much the better. This is what the Apostle is speaking in the following words —

Colossians 3:5

5 Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.

Colossians 3:12-14

12 Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, 13 bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. 14 And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.

If we put to death what we currently possess in physical form, we will meet death; if we put on what we do not possess, it will be nothing more than forgery — not to the people that may see us but to the Lord, God who sees everything. You see, this is almost an exact replica of the Law of Conservation of Mass — Matter can neither be created nor destroyed. When applied to us in spiritual terms, we cannot posses compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, patience, & most of all, love, if we do not already possess the Nature that enables such object to materialize in our person. And what is our Nature — without Christ, our nature is the Sinful Nature spelled out — sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desires, & covetousness.

Colossians 3:3

3 For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.

But for us who are in Christ — who are saved by the Blood of Jesus; He is our Life now — the Blood that runs through us is not physical but spiritual & eternal. THAT Blood is the Wine of the Christ that have changed us into Newness of Life. Into that Blood of the Wine of the Resurrection is what we experienced at the moment of our salvation.

The result of that Newness of Life, is the death of our Mortal Self — the old self, the old nature — The Sinful Nature, died with Christ on the Cross. As it died there upon the Christ, we received the Newness of His Spirit — the Holy Spirit — that inhabits the hearts of His people enabling them to exhibit & manifest the very objects of that Newness.

Creating in us that Law in the end upholds the Law of Conservation of Mass. In Christ Jesus through His Blood & the Spirit that enables us, our New Matter can neither be created nor destroyed. Created into Newness, it cannot ever be taken from us nor abandon us. What new thing can take the place of the New Matter present upon us? And how can it revert back unto itself to the old matter? That would fundamentally undo the work & power of the Eternal Son & the Eternal Father. Created into Newness, it cannot ever be destroyed nor expunged & deleted from His memory — we are forever His & He is forever ours!
